Ahhh! I always thought that Flash Gordon should have had his head examined for not preferring the sultry Princess Aura to the simpering, ever-fainting Dale Arden! Priscilla Lawson had a number of tiny parts after FG, including THE WOMEN and TEST PILOT. I loved her in this serial and I also loved Beatrice Roberts (one of L.B. Mayer's "consorts") in the follow-up as Queen Azura.

Thanks for sharing your research on Ed Brophy. He and Ann apparently stayed close to Norma, as they were among the few Hollywood folks who were invited to her private funeral. Norma and Eugene Pallette were also working at Fine Arts in early 1916-- Frankly i would be surprised if Norma had a private secretary already at that time, though she would have needed one by the end of the year.

I see you found them in the 1930 census though the address is actually 1334-1336 North Harper Ave., an apartment building known as Harper House in West Hollywood. It's still there. Not only is Norma also living there (listed as Norma Schenck), but also Gilbert Roland (the reason she was separated from Schenck), her mother Margaret Talmadge, Ben Lyon, Joe E. Brown, and Jeannette Loff.

Ed also had a significant part as Norma and Natalie's brother in Yes or No (1920).

Here's a little bit about Ann(e) and Ed from Jimmy Starr, who was working for the Schenck enterprises around 1922 or 1923:

I went about my regular duties as office boy. … First, the distribution of the mail to the various departments and to Anne Pallette, Norma Talmadge’s secretary. She had been married to Eugene Pallette, the rising comedian and character actor. Her current romantic interest was Eddie Brophy, who, at the time, was an assistant director. Secretly he had a yen to be a comedian but was afraid to make the plunge. He did some years later and was very successful. And he also married Anne Pallette. … Since Norma Talmadge occupied a cottage (it had been built for Mary Pickford as her studio home), where she lived when not before the cameras, one of my don’t-you-ever-miss-on-this duties was to check with Miss Pallette at eleven-thirty and then do the shopping for lunch. Upon getting the grocery and meat order from Miss Pallette, I would then leap into the Ford and dash for a market on Western Avenue, a dozen blocks from the studio. .... I often ordered more than was actually necessary because Anne Pallette hated to see things go to waste and offered me the leftover lamb chops.

Jimmy Starr. Barefoot on Barbed Wire. Lanham Md. : Scarecrow, 2001 p. 31-32

and one from Norma herself:

My noon meal is always served in the little bungalow where Anne Brophy, a friend of many years’ standing who married Edward Brophy, formerly one of our assistant directors, lunches with me. Anne is my private secretary and attends to my mail, which runs into several hundred letters each day.

Norma Talmadge, “Close-Ups” pt. 6 Saturday Evening Post, June 25, 1927 p. 43+

Thanks for the info on Ed. The knowledge at this site is quite amazing. I know where I'm turning to if I end up doing another actor. I have corrected my blog for the address. Can't believe I missed that!

Actually, the Harper House apartment building is relatively new. It was built by Boyd Willat on tbe site of Irvin Willat's home and named after Boyd's company, Harper House, wbich in turn was named after the house on Harper. Harper House produced the Day Runner appointment books that were ubiquitous in the 1980s and 1990s.

Thanks, Bob, i got my information from a couple of websites, so do they have it wrong? They say it's a 1929 building by Leland Bryant.

You're quite welcome. The research on him was a bit tougher because of the misinformation on him. My favorite parts were finding out the truth about his first marriage and the fact that there was no third wife. My only regret is not finding out his first wife's family history, but I haven't given up yet....

Here's Harper House on Google Maps, for anyone who wants to see it from a few different angles.

I feel like I've seen the exterior used as a movie location at least once, but not sure when that might have been.

It was used in several movies but the only one of them I saw was The Last Boy Scout. Scream 3 I recognize but never watched it.

You're quite welcome. This one was more enjoyable researching than I expected. I have to confess however to never seeing any of his films. I do plan on it now though.

OldSquid, I've only had time to read the articles on Nora Bayes and Harrison Ford-Beatrice Prentice, but they're really outstanding pieces of research. I've learned a lot from them and commend you on your work.

I have my own laundry list of people with confused/confusing origins and/or ambiguous birthdates, but I don't know if you're open to requests! I look forward to reading the rest of your blog entries.

Thank you for the kind words. As far as requests, I am always looking for future subjects. I only have one possible person saved right now and that's Marvel Rea, however I've yet to do any preliminary checking on her to see if it will even be worthwhile. Let me know any you have in mind. I normally work on two at a time anyway.

Here are some of my big question marks:

*(William) Wallace Reid. I know most of what I need to about his family origins, but his birth year is problematic. He seems to have used 15 April 1891 (per his draft registration and age in the 1920 census), but the biography published by his mother shortly after Wally's death in 1923 gives 15 April 1892. (And she was there, so...) The Reids are nowhere to be found in the 1900 or 1910 census rolls. He was reportedly born in St. Louis, but my search of the city's birth registers yielded nothing.

*Charles Ray. His family background is pretty clear, but his entry in the 1900 census gives a birth month of March 1890 while he used 1891 during most of his adult life.

*Buck Jones, born as Charles Gebhart in Indiana around 1888 to 1891. My searches are detailed at viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22183

*Evelyn Brent, one of the knottiest (naughtiest?) cases. Early in her career, she claimed Elizabeth Riggs as her original name and 1895 as her birth year. Sometimes she gave Syracuse, NY as her birthplace, other times Florida. 1895 is the year implied in her 1915 NY census listing and given in her 1919 passport application. But I've never found her in a pre-1915 census, and her SSDI record gives 1901 as her birth year. It would take a fair bit of vanity to give up six years of benefits, but stranger things have happened (especially since, AFAIK, she wasn't all that wealthy). Her actual DOB is probably hidden away in diocesan baptismal records in Syracuse.

Yes, they were intended as names for possible blogs, especially Jones and Brent. But if you find anything on Reid and Ray, feel free to post it here; the more widely disseminated this info is, the better.
