Deception (1946)

Post by brendangcarroll » Sun May 15, 2016 10:59 am

Dear Colleagues!

I came across this article by chance and just had to share it with you all!

It's one of the most amusing articles I've read in a very long time and is very well informed. Some lines made me laugh out loud!

Enjoy!

Best wishes,

Rains is masterful and the restaurant scene is hilarious.

He is truly amazing in that scene--he rattles off that ridiculous dialogue like he's making it all up as he goes along. I adore Deception, hairbrained as it is.

One of my top ten favorite films and my favorite Rains picture by far. Irving He-Got-a-Bad-Rapper did a fine job with this one and Korngold's score is MAGNIFICO. This and HI DIDDLE DIDDLE are my two "you have to see this" pictures when I have friends visit the Rialto.

A late friend of mine, Billy Roy, is barely visible in the film as a busboy during the "woodcock" scene. He said Rains was having an absolute blast doing that sequence.

One thing that always made me curious was why they decided to have an END CAST for this film. There are only five name players in the picture. Davis' protege Dick Erdman didn't even make it to the sparse End Cast.

I don't know if I've ever taken it quite as seriously as does the writer of the linked essay but it's an interesting look at the film. I read somewhere that the over the top apartment Grot designed for Davis was based on Leonard Bernstein's place. No idea if that's true. I also enjoy Davis and Henreid, both frankly forty-ish (as Belle Poitrine would say), playing "students." It's Hollywood on eight cylinders.
