Recently saw this superb little B film (c1941) on a sub channel--new film to me and I thought it was extremely well acted,
despite it's very odd story, with Lorre a sympathetic victim/villian (?) and Evelyn Keyes doing a fine job as well. Great little B Movie with a tough, uncompromising ending.

Any fans of this film out there? Why is it not for sale on a standard dvd?

I like it; story-wise, with its many dark turns, it reminds me of radio dramas more than movies of the era. (Does anyone have a good explanation for why radio drama was so much more morbid than movies? No Breen office?) Lorre is excellent— as he was many times on radio, for that matter.

I caught this one on (British) Channel 4 sometime in the eighties and was likewise impressed. A very good all-round movie worth anybody's time. The film is on YouTube at the moment...
