At last- PHANTOM LADY!!!

I ran PHANTOM LADY for my Rialto crowd last year (mint original 16 print). None of them had seen it. Everyone was flabergasted by the jam session scene. Still packs a wallop!!

One of the most interesting things about the film for me is the complete absence of incidental scoring. There is a perfunctory main title (using Universal's popular hit "I'll Remember April") and a benign end title, followed by Skinner's "Strange Faces" end cast. Other than that, the only music heard is source music - the musical show with Aurora Miranda, the jam session and radio and juke box cues. The lack of scoring really enhances the subjective realism, especially in the climactic scene.

Oooh! Detour! Could this finally be a worthy release? [**crosses fingers, toes, eyes**]

For a second there I thought I could ditch my Korean quasi-bootleg DVD copy of the original version, Gone to Earth, but that Amazon post states it's the David O. Selznick recut version. But perhaps we'll be lucky enough to get both versions on one disc when more info comes to light.

That's the exact same set Universal released in 2018. Except, as per Shout Factory's discriminatory policy, they have stripped off the captioning that Universal provided. Reprehensible, I call it.

The Shout Factory page on the Karloff/Lugosi set lists the aspect ratio of 1.33:1, when the films were released at standard 1.37:1. The recent Universal blu-rays of films from that period had the correct aspect ratio. Are the Shout technical specs just a case of marketing doofusness, or will these be wrong aspect ratios or from old transfers?

The Kino rep at Home Theater Forum has announced Death Takes a Holiday (1934) as "coming soon". It's part of a large deal they have with Universal, including a dozen or so 30s titles.

Other titles from that decade confirmed as part of the deal (no specifics or release dates yet) include Love Me Tonight (32), The Song of Songs (33), The Good Fairy (35), The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (35), The General Died at Dawn (36), Angel (37), Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (38), and Beau Geste (39).

That's good news, I remember it got a sneaky DVD release years ago as a bonus feature with the deluxe edition of its remake, the unspectacular Meet Joe Death starring Brad Pitt.

The version that's been around forever is the Realart re-issue where there's a tell-tale excision with a few remaining frames. What can be observed if you don't blink is Frank Lawton shooting a tiger that's about to pounce on Frances Drake. This breaks the ice and leads to their romance.

I suspect that the scene was cut prior to release when someone belatedly realized there are no tigers in Africa. The music track for the scene survives on acetate disc.

Unless I missed it in a subsequent post, it doesn't look like anyone else has noted this here so I will: the Kino Lorber blu-ray does indeed include both the Selznick The Wild Heart and the original Gone to Earth. I've not watched either in their entirety yet but from sampling some scenes the transfer of Gone to Earth actually looks nicer (to my untrained eyes) than The Wild Heart.

Should have updated when the disc finally came through my mailbox, haven't had a chance to give it a spin yet, but I'm happy to hear that the original cut is the more pleasing transfer.
