Any Ella Raines Fans Out There?

Ella Raines, despite her strikingly attractive looks, had a very small career in Hollywood films.
I liked her best in "Tall In The Saddle," (1944) with John Wayne. "Phantom Lady" was another
key role.

I know she died in 1988 of throat cancer at a too young 68.

Ella doesn't seem to have been much written about. Is there a bio on her somewhere? Or a long essay
in a film-star anthology? (Hopefully, generously illustrated.)

One movie of hers I haven't seen and would very much like to see on TCM (I don't think it's ever been on) is The Suspect (1944) by Robert Siodmak and starring Charles Laughton.

She's wonderful in "The Senator Was Indiscreet" (1947) with William Powell, and those liquid eyes of hers show beautifully in "Brute Force" (1947), too. Her eyes are prettiest, though, in "Tall in the Saddle" (1944) with John Wayne. That's when I was first attracted to her.

Sturges cast her against the wishes of the studio and has been quoted as saying he kept her because she already cut her hair for the role.

She looks great in Impact, a movie with good ideas but ultimately a poor script.

I love the way the heading is phrased. One could easily fit Ella's fellow actresses of her generation in the question ie Alexis Smith, Betsy Drake, Sara Shane - still living in Australia today. :D
