Banned or Cut in Britain Pre-1934.

Post by earlytalkiebuffRob » Mon Mar 22, 2021 1:45 pm

A friend asked me about pre-Code American movies which were banned or cut in Britain for their sexual content. For starters, I knew of RED-HEADED WOMAN (1932) and BABY FACE (1933), and suspect quite a few more, such as THE SMILING LIEUTENANT's 'Jazz Up Your Lingerie' number. Am sure I can come up with some likely candidates, such as THE STORY OF TEMPLE DRAKE (1933), SUSAN LENOX (1931), CONVENTION CITY (1933), EMPLOYEES' ENTRANCE (1933) and A FAREWELL TO ARMS (1932), etc.

Would think also the bedroom scene in ALL QUIET was another as I don't recall seeing that part until a restored version was put out on VHS in the 1990s.

Any more come to mind? And would be interested also if any of the cut films are only known to exist now in that form...

I mentioned both FREAKS and ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, but he said he was more interested in censor trouble due to sexual content, although both films may have had that problem also. And MIRACLE WOMAN was more for the religious aspect. Was wondering about LADIES OF LEISURE (1930) and FORBIDDEN (1932), though...
