All worth having, but FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD is best, esp. set number 1. It contains absolute must-haves such as BABY FACE and RED-HEADED WOMAN.

I agree that all are worth buying, but I personally liked the Universal set the best, with "Murder At the Vanities" being my favorite.
I also thought "Baby Face" was clearly the best item in Volume 1 of the "Forbidden Hollywood" set, and that Volumes 2 and 3 were actually better overall values. But as they say, your mileage may vary.
I would also strongly encourage the purchase of these sets, because it may prompt the issuance of further pre-Code sets in the future. We're still waiting for the DVD release of "Employees' Entrance" with Warren William and Loretta Young, or "Ten Cents A Dance" with Barbara Stanwyck! SETH

Please don't call the occasional theatrical release of an old movie a "reissue." We do not say "The next time you go to the Louvre, you will see a re-issue of the Mona Lisa.” -- Cecil B. DeMille
since we're on Pre-Code sets, what is the fascination with the lost 1933 film CONVENTION CITY? since nobody has seen it in 70 years, what are we supposed to look for in it providing a print is found? and there are rumors of it surviving as it was supposedly shown in 1939 when it was supposed to be lost.
What he said. Both.Danny Burk wrote:All worth having, but FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD is best, esp. set number 1. It contains absolute must-haves such as BABY FACE and RED-HEADED WOMAN.

I would also like to throw in the set of Roan Entertainment DVD's:

Although not up to the high standards set by Warner's and Universal they used pretty good elements on these releases.

This film and the search for it has been discussed in detail on the Vitaphone Project website at www.picking.com/vitaphone.html Apparently it was released in other markets under a different title, and so may yet be found in some foreign archive.sepiatone wrote:since we're on Pre-Code sets, what is the fascination with the lost 1933 film CONVENTION CITY?
My guess is that the fascination with "Convention City" is about the same as with "London After Midnight," another lost film which supposedly isn't that big a deal either. But still, it would be nice to see Chaney's performance, for good, bad or otherwise. All I've ever seen are the production stills that were printed in the "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine over 40 years ago. SETH

Well, a 1933 Warner Bros. comedy written by Robert Lord and with the likes of Joan Blondell and Guy Kibbee seems pretty obviously appealing to me. Greenbriar Pictures Show investigated the fate of this film here.

If a friend ever asks you `So exactly how racy were those Pre-Codes?' just pop on `Search for Beauty' and show them!Michael O'Regan wrote:I believe there are some entitled FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD?

It includes a brief scene set in a room full of completely naked men and a bunch of beauty pageant winners essentially being enticed overseas by con artists to work at what they think is a health spa but is actually a quasi-bordello. Hoo boy!
