Re Copyright Status of RICH MAN'S FOLLY (1931)

Post by Fred Guida » Wed Apr 20, 2011 7:03 am

Does anyone out there have any info on the copyright status of the 1931 Paramount feature RICH MAN'S FOLLY?

It appears to be one of those odd titles that has slipped into the public domain but I can't seem to get a definitive answer on this without initiating the formal search process.

I have no commercial interest in the film. I'm just interested in showing it to the public in an academic setting. (Swank Motion Pictures, who have non-theatrical rights on the early Paramount stuff, have no record or knowledge of it.)

Thanks!

Copyright renewed December 22, 1958. Copyright renewal number R227029

Based on a Dickens novel with Grover Jones working on the screenplay. I wouldn't mind seeing it myself.

It appears to use the plot of Dombey & Son but set in America and updated to 1931

It was shown in 16mm at Cinesation in the last couple of years; 2009, I think. Mike, James, or Christopher probably have a review herein.

Thanks very much for all the helpful replies!

Unfortunately, this does not seem to have ever had an official video release. 16mm prints have been out there forever and its currently available in homemade DVD-R...
