The only Chase talkie I know of on DVD is On The Wrong Trek, his next to last short for Roach. It's on one of the Lost Films of L&H discs.

HOLLYWOOD PARTY, NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE and several of the Roach shorts appear at least occasionally on TCM.

Whispering Whoopee (1930) is also on the Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy DVD set, and it's a pretty good one.

So many titles seem to be lost according to the recent Charley Chase book, which would be a pity.

Mike Schlesinger reported a couple of years ago on plans for release of Chase's Columbia talkies. Unfortunately it got put on the shelf. There's a thread on the topic -- do a search and you should be able to find it.

I always loved the Chase silent two-reeler NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE (1929), which was used behind the main titles of Robert Youngson's WHEN COMEDY WAS KING (1960). Based upon that, I was anxious to see the Chase sound shorts, too. But at least in my own humble opinion, very few of them rose to the level of NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE.

Perhaps I just couldn't connect with the Chase character, which seemed to vary from Lothario to hapless do-gooder. It's a shame, because I think Charley was very good at what we now call "situation comedy"; he just didn't seem to get the right kind of polished stories that would do him justice. SETH

That wasn't Neighborhood House (1936). It was Movie Night (1929). It was Chase's final silent and is one of the great silent comedies (IMHO).

I was about to chime in that NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE isn't that great, but I see it's a case of mistaken identity.

If the upcoming Laurel and Hardy set does well, perhaps Vivendi/RHI will consider issuing a DVD set of Charley Chase talkies. That would be a nice dream at least.

It sure would.

To be honest, as far as I can see, Chase is not so popular this side of the pond. I meet so many people (including film collectors) who either have never heard of him or assume he made only a handful of forgettable films.

Thanks for the correction. I have a feeling that maybe "Movie Night" was remade as "Neighborhood House"? In any event, now the record is straight. SETH

I think NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE was actually a shortened version of an unreleased feature. Is this correct?

Yes. It was originally a feature that was titled (I think) Bank Night.

(I was incorrect. The feature was titled Neighborhood House also. Thanks RMR!)

Yes. Apparently the feature didn't play so was shelved. Is it lost? Has anyone seen it?

So far as is known, the feature version doesn't exist. There's some discussion of it here at Silent Comedy Mafia, that better explains how Neighborhood House came to be.
