Gaudio, Polito and the Great Cinematographers

Post by Phillyrich » Mon Jul 25, 2011 12:06 pm

I am trying to learn more about the great cinematographers in the "classic" era, especially Sol Polito and Tony Gaudio who largely created the great Warner Brothers style. (For instance, both worked on "The Adventures of Robin Hood.")

Not many books on this subject. Any ideas?

Gaudio had a brother, also a cinematographer, who's career was cut short when he died in 1920. I can't remember his name but a wikipedia search would answer. James Van Trees is another interesting cameraman if not for the reason that his mother Julia Ivers was an early woman film director and mother and son occasionally worked together. I think one of their remaining films is an early Lenore Ulric film , now in the Library of Congress, The Heart of Paula.

Wow, I had no idea that this film survived. It's an early Paramount from 1916.

There are such books as "Images in Low Key: Cinematographer Sol Polito, ASC", "Art of Cinematography: Interviews with Five Cinematographers," "Behind the Camera, the Cinematographer's Art," "Five American Cinematographers," "Hollywood Cameramen: Sources of Light," among others. You might want to check the website for LOC, the Herrick, UCLA, etc., for other titles.

Are you more interested about reading about them personally, or how they did what they did technically? There are far more of the latter easily available.

I thank all respondents. As per last response, I am interested primarily in their craft-- how they created the WB house style of that era.
