7 Vitaphone Discs being offered on eBay (2021-02-20)

Unread post by yanceycravat » Sat Feb 20, 2021 9:22 pm

Wanted to alert preservationists to this...

Not sure if there's anything here that hasn't been found already but hopefully there are some new discoveries here.

The seller doesn't list what films these discs are related to. Maybe someone knows by the numbers shown.

I find the 1500.00 price exorbitant but I know nothing on the value of such discs. It would be great to have some sound to a mute print!

Price is absurd. Three disks are marked for Mr. Antonio (1929) and if our own Bob Lipton's IMDB review is any indication it seems like that one already has a [questionable] sound track, so whether these might be an improvement is an open question. Not sure it'd be worth $200 a disk to find out.

Oh, one of those sellers.

That title is not listed here either way, though: http://www.picking.com/vitaphone-database.html

I suppose from the numbers the other titles might be deduced.

You'd think they'd give those interested a short audio clip. Perhaps Ebay isn't up to that. If it is, the falure is an indictment.

On the handful of occasions that I saw a vitaphone disc on ebay, that never happened. (Overpricing always happened, though.)

About a year ago, I ran into three Paramount/Publix discs at a rural antique store in central Texas. I paid $25 for the three of them, although they were in pretty rough shape. They are from late in the game (1930-31), and I figured already rendered redundant, as they would have been concurrent with sound-on-film releases. Still nice to have, for the history of it all. Nothing that would be needed for preservation, and indeed, one of the discs is for reel-6 of "The Lawyer's Secret" (1931-Par), a common and long-circulating film. The other two are from Fleischer cartoons, "Barnacle Bill" (1930) and "Accordion Joe" (1930). Wouldn't mind seeing that latter cartoon, as I always liked that 1930 Okeh recording of the tune by Cornell (Smelser) and his Orchestra.

When I first spotted these in a corner of that hot, dusty store, I sure hoped they might have been something rare and needed for some early sound film. Ah, well.

Still, very nice to find. There's still hope then.

And if anyone wanted to test equipment they'd probably need to start with a disc like that.

Mister Antonio (1929)

They're only charging $4.15 for shipping. I sure hope they pack it well.

The film is available on DVD. Not the best print, not the worst, either. Curious that those discs should show up on Ebay.

A a fellow eBayer, the shipping charge can be a "whatever" price, or even "free". That is outside of the "standard cost" for the included items, not taking into account how infrequent these sales may be. :)

So most sellers at some time or another will exploit this by selling a common $100 used widget for $75 and $25 shipping, just to make it look like a cheaper sale.

I just don't think this guy put that much thought into it. So this is a sale where I would communicate with him after I purchased it and before he sent it, just to make sure we were on the same page.

BIG. RED. FLAG. I hadn't noticed that.
