Peaceful Alley 1921- Monty Banks

Unread post by Hamilton's Grandson » Thu Dec 21, 2017 6:42 pm

I recently had one of two 35 mm nitrate reels digitized from the short comedy Peaceful Alley 1921 with Monty Banks. This short comedy is not to be confused with Peaceful Alley 1929 with Lloyd Hamilton.

Monty Banks plays A Man of Leisure who works as a rent collector. Definitely a hilarious slapstick-type of comedy based on reel 2. Certainly hope that reel 1 shows up someday to make it complete. I have provided a few stills from the transfer below.

The film looks to be in nice shape. Are those full frame pictures or zoomed in pictures of each frame?

Hi pookybear,

I just pause the DVD-R with media player or the external hard drive mp4 file and snip tool the images from the screen directly from the large screen laptop that I use and then upload them. If the nitrate is in good shape then the image transfer turns out great when creating these type of stills. I do increase the mag to 150% before uploading. I was told by the collector that I acquired this reel from that it came from a NY theater and had been in storage there for years. There is still nitrate material out there that is from lost or very rare titles that may only be in archives and not yet in the public domain.

I love the cop smoking a huge cigar while on duty!

Jim,

Banks actually gives the cop the cigar which ends up being a roman candle and sends sparks flying which gets him in alot of trouble.

If you have seen Oil's Well 1923 with Banks, this film is a very similar style of comedy.

Well, there ya go -- still pictures can lie. Who knew?

I should have known that no policeman would ever bend the law by smoking on duty!
