I'm not going to post the text from this blog here, because you really need to click on the link to read the BoingBoing blog and see fascinating photos of restorations of old books, vinyl records, paper prints of films, and audio tapes. Even those awful old RCA Selectavision discs.

This is a wonderful piece of work - it's nice to see LOC opening up their doors a bit to give a glimpse of how some of this work is done. Preserving books, audio and films can seem really abstract without actually seeing the problems you can run into.

My big hobby is collecting radio transcriptions - 16" discs made for radio stations in the 30s, 40s and 50s. I've got a special turntable for the discs, custom styli in various sizes and a vintage equalizer I use in digitizing the material.

So far, I've only managed to snag one sound on film disc - it's from an entry in a Fitzgerald Pictures series called "Movie Horoscopes". My disc is the one for "May". It was pressed by Victor and is from about 1930. I've never found any documentation on the series and nothing on whether the film elements survive.
