The Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra celebrates the 95th birthday of Charlie Chaplin's classic silent short, "The Rink" with a special program presented by the Anne Arundel Community Concert Association (their 60th season!). In addition to "The Rink", the orchestra will screen Buster Keaton's 1922 short, "The Blacksmith", and a concert program of ragtime and theatre classics from the 1910s and 1920s. Both films will be shown with their period-correct scores.

About the Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra:
The Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra is America's premier college-age ragtime orchestra, re-creating the sounds found before the era of talking films and jazz music. Founded in 2010, the Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra is one of the few ensembles in America that uses the original scores and antique instruments to play America's music: Ragtime. The orchestra plays theater, dance, and concert selections using their over 1,800 piece collection of orchestral arrangements from the era. The collection represents over 400 composers and over 30 years of music between 1882 and 1930.
The Orchestra has been heard on radio programs such as Hot Jazz Saturday Night. The PRO were the featured performers at the Central Pennsylvania Ragtime Festival in 2010 and 2011. Their first recording "That Teasin' Rag: Vintage American Arrangements from the Ragtime Era" was released on the Rivermont label earlier this year.

The concert sounds interesting, but isn't $30 per ticket is a bit high for two shorts with live music?

I didn't set the price, but the show includes two shorts, plus an hour concert program. So it's roughly 40 minutes of film, plus an hour of ragtime, theater, and dance music from 1909-1921. I may be incorrect about the price though, since I've only heard that secondhand. Call the community concert association to verify the price.

SEVERNA PARK - An Arnold resident will be leading his ragtime orchestra in a special silent film event next weekend at Severna Park High School.
Andrew Greene's Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra will provide accompaniment for two cinema classics - Charlie Chaplin's "The Rink" and Buster Keaton's "The Blacksmith."
"Every film's a challenge," said Greene, 20, a junior at the University of Maryland. "It's making sure the music we play matches up with what's going on the screen."
Greene formed the orchestra as a freshman, and it's now expanded to include students from three other colleges. Twelve musicians from the University of Maryland, Towson University and New York University will be playing with Peacherine for the upcoming show.
The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and is part of a series by the Anne Arundel Community Concert Association. Tickets are $30 and will be available at the door.
"The Rink," which was made in 1916, turns 95 the day after the concert and Greene said there might be a version of "Happy Birthday" mixed into the program for an audience sing-along.
