Most last just long enough to identify them. A Trip to the Moon lasts longer, though you just see bits and pieces (i.e., the girls loading the cannon, the cannon firing, hitting the Moon (I suppose... I've forgotten), battling Moonmen, returning to Earth, dropping into the see. It's like the trailer version of A Trip to the Moon.Gagman 66 wrote:Wow! Pretty impressive list. That's quite a bit of footage. But how long does each excerpt last?

This is an interesting list too; the films Mr Scorsese got his team to watch for homework before production; for 3D and silent techniques, and for the child-eye view he wanted to capture. Interestingly there are some fairly obscure - and British - titles amongst them. http://www.movies.com/movie-news/guess- ... watch/5260
I could use some digital restoration myself...
Re: List of Silent Films Appearing in HUGO
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there an allusion to THE PENALTY (1920) when Sasha Baron Cohen climbs a wall in the train station using only his hands? It certainly reminded me of Chaney as Blizzard pulling himself up to spy on people.
What say you, Mr Scorsese, in case you're reading this?

I'm with you Arndt - I almost freaked and fell out of my chair when I saw SBC climb up the wall like Chaney's Blizzard!Arndt wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there an allusion to THE PENALTY (1920) when Sasha Baron Cohen climbs a wall in the train station using only his hands? And the scene where Cohen has to force his lips into a smile--it's the total opposite of the forced smile in BROKEN BLOSSOMS, but the allusion was unmistakable.TempleDrake wrote:I'm with you Arndt - I almost freaked and fell out of my chair when I saw SBC climb up the wall like Chaney's Blizzard!Arndt wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there an allusion to THE PENALTY (1920) when Sasha Baron Cohen climbs a wall in the train station using only his hands? I asked screenwriter John Logan about the reference today. He said Chaney was "an obsession" with him, and added, "I know that movie you're talking about, but no. Not intentionally. I wish I could claim credit for that, it makes great sense."Arndt wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there an allusion to THE PENALTY (1920) when Sasha Baron Cohen climbs a wall in the train station using only his hands? Looper.com has a long article with photos entitled "Things Only Adults Notice in Hugo" that is worth a read.
