Two episodes of Doctor Who were returned today at the Missing Believed Wiped event. Galaxy 4 episode 2 and The Underwater Menace episode 3.

That episode was never put into syndication which meant the video was never telerecorded to film. It was the film episodes that were sent to other countries. When the video master was wiped for The Feast of Steven, it is gone forever with the exception of the off-air soundtrack recording.

The BBC really shot themselves in the foot, wiping all those episodes and recording over them to save money on tape. Monty Python's Flying Circus nearly shared the same fate. Fortunately, Terry Jones had the foresight to buy the masters so the Beeb could buy new tape.

I only know of people who may have recorded short scenes as someone did in Australia in the 1970s or possble off screen stills. I have not heard of anyone who actually recorded entire episodes on film. Of course there are the people who recorded all the episodes on audio and that is how we have all missing episodes existing on audio. We also have John Cura who was hired to take tele-snaps during recordings.

Though come to think of it, I do have an article in my collection from a film magazine in the UK from the 1960s that tells people how to position their camera to shoot at the TV. There is a picture attached to it that is from The Wheel in Space episode 5. I have also heard of a school that had a very early Shibaden recorder and recorded The Ice Warriors on transmission but it was wiped after they viewed the episodes. I think the only way we will get material back, I mean all BBC and not just Doctor Who, is through the private film collector or like you mention a viewer who may have done some sort of domestic recording at the time of transmission. It's a very interesting subject!

Don't think that is true. Peter Cook was the one who wanted to buy his master tapes but wasn't allowed to. What the pythons did was smuggle out some copies or possibly master tapes, not sure.
Also, it was common practice and not just the BBC. The others did it too, you won't find the 1st series of The Avengers for example. Other countries have similar stories.
