I have about 50 of the 2012 Silent Film Benefit Calendars left (and that's good, I did three printings and sold out of the first two), so I've put them on a 50% off sale until they're gone (or until the end of February, when I'll definitely close out). Order at the Silent Film Calendar Page.
So far, purchasers of the calendar have helped raise $2500 for the UCLA Film and Television Archive. They've told me:
At this point, we are considering using the donation towards the preservation of a 1910 IMP short subject titled THE TIME-LOCK SAFE, starring Florence Lawrence, King Baggot, and Owen Moore:
From the IMP promotional synopsis: "A drama that suddenly and unexpectedly turns into a farce. If your little child were locked in a safe and you paid a professional safe-blower a stack of money to get him out, and then found the kid safely ensconced in the towel basket and not in the safe at all, would you be glad or would you be sore? Imagine what a corking good picture can be worked up on this plot."
Some money was donated years back towards its preservation but nowhere near enough to do the job. Your donation might just make it possible to preserve this sole surviving copy and make a new screening print as well. This is the general thinking at this time, and may change if some problem arises with this particular project.
This is the sort of project I love -- no one else is likely to fund the restoration, but it's a film that's worth saving. The calendar project will be mentioned in the restoration credits, and you can smugly say "that's me!" as it goes by.

Rodney, do they say how much more is needed for the full restoration?

Just what I quoted -- but that third paragraph is promising. I'm not quite done selling calendars (four more today! Thanks, folks!), so the amount of my contribution isn't completely final yet either.barafan wrote:Rodney, do they say how much more is needed for the full restoration?

Rodney, this is awesome!
Kelly Brown will be delighted and the late Sally Dumaux would have been more then pleased with a Baggott restoration in progress.

Gus Visser has no place in a silent film calendar. I mean, really, the nerve.Christopher Jacobs wrote:Gee, I wonder why that would be! (And where's Gus Visser?!)LouieD wrote:Can't wait for February!!
Although I was glad to see Gus Visser get a shout out in a recent column in the San Francisco Chronicle that my mother (or perhaps my "Ma" in this instance) clipped for me.
