After 3D, what next but...

Movie News: George Lucas has today unveiled plans to re-release all six Star Wars films in an exciting ‘Silent’ format.

“I think that the success of The Artist has proved that silent movies are the future”, he announced.

“In fact it was before I’d even heard about The Artist that my plans for ‘Silent Star Wars’ were formulated. Years before. So I’m not stealing their idea or anything like that. It was probably – oh I don’t know – six years ago when I had the idea. Maybe seven.”

Work has already begun on the time-consuming ‘digital de-sonicifying’ process, with the first of the films expected to be ready for release early in 2013.

“You would think it would be a relatively simple process to ‘retro-fit’ silence onto a movie – maybe by just turning down the sound – but it’s not that easy. Honest.” Lucas explained.

“We have to digitally scrub each separate frame with sonic removal pixels and reverse re-engineer the audio landscape from scratch with special static things and that. It’s all very expensive. We’re not just going to turn the sound down”.

When it was suggested that ‘Silent Star Wars’ may be just a cynical move to get fans to pay again to see a film they’ve already seen countless times, Lucas was emphatic: “Look – Star Wars fans are not stupid. They’re probably the cleverest, most discerning cinema-goers there are.”

“I have no doubt that the lack of sound adds something to the movies. Well, obviously it takes something away from the movies too – the sound. But it probably adds a new depth too, I would imagine. And, of course, Jar Jar Binks will be completely mute. Which can only be a good thing’.”

Actually there are already a number of silent movie versions of STAR WARS you can view on line. Just do a google search on star wars silent movie and you'll find several, usually converted to black and white, extra-grainy picture, complete with intertitles and tinkling piano comedy/melodrama music. It really would make quite a good silent feature, however, with the full John WIlliams score and selected sound effects.

I think silents work so well because there are two full art forms, side
by side, painting and music. (As well as pantomime). It's already
a set with infinite possibilities.

Supose Lucas's Star Wars was a remake from a silent. Now imagine the silent...

Who would play Luke Skywalker in a silent version?

And who play Darth Vader? And Han solo ? ...

Buddy Rogers for Luke... George O'Brien for Vader ... Fairbanks for Han Solo...

And Mary Pickford for princess Leia,,, The Fairbank / Rogers cross feelings of her would be perfect
Keep thinking...

Lon Chaney as Yoda, Karl Dane in the Chewbacca suit.

El Brendel and Snitz Edwards could be C-3PO and R2-D2.

Luckily, Harrison Ford could be Han Solo if it had been made during the silent era.

:? I can't tell if your response is pro or con, but I didn't like it. I'm assuming it's Con? Sheesh, Lucas has the money and the clout to have BEAU GESTE out in no time on Blu-ray if he wanted to do it.

The article was a joke.

On second thought, make that "A joke, the article was."

Fred,

:? OK, I'm glad because on the TCM boards it was brought up as being factual. I originally thought it was joke, until I heard the comments over there. So it's not like I was duped. Still think Lucas should fork over the bucks though.

I can give one good reason !!!

At least the spaceships and blasters would have no sound on space, since sound waves do not propagates on vacuum.

One more fiz to the list...
