Wow! Look at that. Proof positive that people can be fallible in their identification of photographs. I wonder if the same might hold true with painted portraits also. (Probably just other people, though.)

:o Isn't that Lupe Velez? About the only connection being that one both are women, each acted in Silent films, and they did appear together with Fairbanks in THE GAUCHO. That's about all I can think of? How wrong can you get it? And this appears to be for some London film society webpage too? :(

Don't be silly, Gagman. It's Olive Thomas.

Doesn't quite look like Olive Thomas to me? Are you sure it's not Olive Borden? Could be Bebe Daniels? Or either Mary Brian or Jean Arthur. Yeah, that's it! Or wait, maybe it's Madge Bellamy.

I'd hazard a guess at Marie Dressler (on a good day).

Your skepticism is understandable.

This image is in fact taken from Mary Pickford's makeup test for her projected comeback feature The Marlene Dietrich Story (1953) to have been directed by Billy Wilder. The project fell through when Mary absolutely refused to learn the German lyrics to "Ich Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuß Auf Liebe Eingestellt" ("Falling In Love Again").

The Google Image files for any major personality are loaded with mislabeled photos. Democracy in action. Even a site I admire & respect greatly, Silent Ladies & Gents, once in a great while presents a wild card. But the "Pickford" photo above establishes a new water-mark in idiocy.

There's even mistakes in Daniel Blum's PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE SILENTS, you can't believe everything you see or read.

I'm kind of more impressed that she auditioned for a Nickelodeon-produced movie, decades before Clarissa Explains It All or even Kenan & Kel.

I don't know what's sadder, the fact that whoever posted it doesn't even know what Mary Pickford looks like or that nobody on facebook bothered to comment it's the wrong photo after 17 shares or the fact that I'm assuming the London Film and Media Institute is a university of some sort and doesn't know what Mary Pickford looks like.

There's considerable resemblance, indeed--but, based on my scrutinizing everything I could lay hands on with Ann in it, it's not that saucy blonde. (Redhead, actually!)

The problem of Social Netorks is: So often irony is hard to recognize. I bet this photo was basically an April Fool's joke.

The Academy is real enough, as is the webpage pictured in the OP:

http://www.media-courses.com/blog/canad ... -pickford/

They slightly redeem themselves by having a picture of the real Mary further down the page, but then there's this hilarious summation of her life after quitting acting:
Unfortunately, the arrival of talking movies signalled the end of Mary’s career as she wasn’t able to successfully make the transition. She officially retired in 1933 but continued producing movies with the Marx Brothers.
("Mary Pickford presents the Marx Brothers in Love Happy — 16 years in the making!")

And the punchline:
Mary was certainly loved throughout her career. Many believe that she was the most popular woman in the entire world during the 1910s and 1920s.

Actors are needed at every age – try acting today at London Academy

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts this photo is intentional, and look, it's worked, generating all this discussion about a site that I would never have known about.

And every post gives these guys one more google of free publicity.

All I know is that Charley Butterworth is actually Louise Fazenda. I know it's true, he admitted it himself.
