Die Nibelungen (1924)

Post by Danny » Wed Sep 05, 2012 8:16 am

Silent Era has posted a notice that DIE NIBELUNGEN is an upcoming Kino release:

Kino Lorber (USA) has announced their Kino Classics Blu-ray Disc edition of Fritz Lang’s Die Nibelungen (1924). The disc will be available on 6 November 2012.

That's great news because it has been on my wish list for a long time. But when does Kino actually offer details on their website? I realize the release is two months away, but I'd like to learn more.

Any "inside" information?

Perhaps not "inside information" but I can tell you the film has been wonderfully restored. When "Arte" television broadcasted the entire (more than four hour long) program, a friend in France sent me a copy. It had German titles with French subtitles (superimposed on them), but I still remember the story from an awful VHS set I once owned. Image quality is amazing.

It's a two part story, "Siegfried" followed by "Kriemhilde's Revenge" and together the make up "Die Nibelungen." The entire epic is worth watching, but I return again and again to "Siegfried."

As a critical comment, Lang was somewhat excessive with many titles, often following one another. Since what I saw was in two languages I cannot read, these were long delays as I waited for the film to continue. That won't be a problem with the KINO copy, but the titles may seem excessive, even if they appear infrequently.
