Bigfoot in Silent Movies?

Post by telical » Fri Mar 08, 2013 10:11 pm

Has anyone seen any references to Bigfoot in silent movies?
Supposedly, Lief Erickson described him around 900 AD,
and Sasquatch is mentioned in many world cultures. With
all the new cell phone cameras, there have been many
new videos posted online. "BigFoot Protects Child" is one of
the ones that has recently surfaced that is pretty good. You can
find them on youtube.

It might not be an clear reference since in Western culture
the Bigfoot or Sasquatch name wasn't that big, but maybe just some sort
of reference to hairy giants, or abominable snowmen, that weren't gorillas.

RAMPER DER TIERMENSCH http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187442/combined from 1927 comes to mind, even though here we know from the start that the beast is merely a human who has neglected his personal hygiene and shed his social graces. Interestingly, only F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre reviews this on imdb. I guess this time he might actually have seen the film. It exists, I have seen it and MacIntyre's plot summary is fairly accurate.

Usually appeared under the name "Greta Garbo".

We need more "straight man" questions for some of the possible responses in here.

He could have seen it but I don't think he did (most likely he got the plot synopsis from Film-Kurier or some other review) Otherwise, why make up all that nonsense about Max Schreck portraying not just one of the crewmen but , to quote the great faker himself, "the embodiment of cold, win, loneliness, starvation....a performance which most closely resembles his brilliant work in "Nosferatu"... " I've seen the movie (or rather the edited version that the BFI holds- which is all there is) and Schreck plays just one of the crew, nothing else. There's no symbolic imaginary companion to Ramper played by Schreck or anyone else. Nevertheless, I've seen Laughing Man's fanciful assertion repeated several times since then (by people who clearly haven't seen the film, just his "review") and it's even found its way into a book about Sasquatch/Abominable Snowman movies)

:? Well, There are two alleged Bigfoot or Sasquatch films on Youtube from 1962 taken in Colorado in Black and White, and in 1963 Louisiana in Color respectively. Both from 8 Millimeter, and each of them Pre-dating the Bluff-Creek Patterson-Gimlin footage of 1967. Technically speaking, these are Silent films, since they were not taken with sound camera's. As far as a Bigfoot movie made during the Silent Era, it's possible, but of course the creature wouldn't have been called Bigfoot.

:) I'll see if I can find the links and post them here.

It would be great if this could come out in DVD.

What do you all think the chances of this are?

I'm sure the Sasquatch cell-phone camera craze could fund a kickstarter even with the clutziest of a fund development
team leader. Maybe even have a Carl Davis score.

:? Blast, the video of the Bigfoot 1963 film from Louisiana has apparently been taken off of Youtube? I had bookmarked the the page in December, and it is no longer there. It might be elsewhere on Youtube though? Shows a huge hairy creature, very tall walking through the thick woods. No one is going to be wearing an elaborate fur costume in early July with 100 degree temps in the Louisiana Bayou. So pretty compelling footage.

Fortunately, you can still see Mr. Heavyfoot.

There was one from France that had a snowman in its plot. I have a 9.5mm cutdown of it that excludes all the abominal snow man footage.

Cant remember the title off hand.

:o OK, this guy claims it is the oldest Bigfoot film, but he was wrong. Since a guy came out with a 50 year old film late last year taken in Colorado in 1962. The year before this one here. This isn't the same video I had marked.

Any leprechauns in pre-1930's silent movies?

But, you know, with all the cell-phone cameras, there doesn't
seem to be an increase in leprechaun sightings being filmed.
