THE WHITE ROSE (1923)

Post by drednm » Wed Mar 20, 2013 12:14 pm

From Jack Hardy on Facebook:

"We have an excellent print that we recently transferred, we still need to have it scored but hopefully we'll have it available on DVD later this year. Thank you for your interest."

I'm excited because The White Rose is one of the films I have waited so long to see. This was shown in Finnish Film Archive some ten years ago but I missed it... :(

A badly washed out copy has been around for years. The original film, if I remember right, was hand tinted in greens and pinks....

Wm. K. Everson said that a beautiful tinted/toned copy was allowed to decompose in the 1960s. The washed out copy Ed talks of is the last minute dupe made from the tinted copy before final decomposition. So sad!

That's why I wondered about what copy Jack found....

Saw it at Pordenone a few years ago - I just checked and it was a MoMA print dating from '77; the only thing washed out about it that I can recall was Carol Dempster's performance; but if a better copy has surfaced, great...
I could use some digital restoration myself...

That was shot at the Shadows-on-the-Teche Plantation here in Louisiana.

Please let me know when you release it.

Thank you,
