Another entry in the Forbidden Hollywood series has been released, and it's a pretty good one; go to http://www.wbshop.com/product/code/1000 ... IDDEN7home" target="_blank" target="_blank for more info.
I believe all four of these titles have been shown previously on TCM, but they are probably worth having on DVD -- at $10 each, it's a good deal. I didn't expect to like THE HATCHET MAN, with Edward G. Robinson and Loretta Young in Chinese makeup, but I was impressed by the acting and the plot, even if it strained credulity at times. SKYSCRAPER SOULS and EMPLOYEE'S ENTRANCE are fine vehicles for Warren William, who has a great line as he invites Maureen O'Sullivan to a pool party at his penthouse -- "Why don't you take off your clothes and join us?" I haven't seen the Bette Davis film EX-WIFE, but it sounds like it might be worthwhile.
Warners says these films are "newly remastered," which isn't the same as "restored," but they looked pretty good when they aired on TCM. And it's good to see these pre-Code items back in circulation again, even if it look 70+ years for it to happen. Kudos to Warners for making them available! SETH

Please don't call the occasional theatrical release of an old movie a "reissue." We do not say "The next time you go to the Louvre, you will see a re-issue of the Mona Lisa.” -- Cecil B. DeMille
Re: Forbidden Hollywood #7
The drag about #7 is I already have three out of the four titles, but a friend of mine's getting it so at least I'll be able to see Ex-Lady. I see there's also a fairly recent Forbidden Hollywood #6, which I'm more intrigued by, it includes a personal fave, The Wet Parade, which I last owned on Beta (who doesn't love seeing Jimmy Durante as a prohie agent?), Mandalay with Kay Francis & Ricardo Cortz (seen it, don't own it), and two films I've never seen, Downstairs with John Gilbert and Massacre with Richard Barthelmess.

Re: Forbidden Hollywood #7
It's available now on Amazon, for $3 more than the Warner website price. But Amazon offers free shipping and Warner does not, so the prices are actually comparable. SETH

Wbshop offers free shipping for items and orders over $25 including FH vol 7, so WBshop is the cheaper choice (for U.S. residents anyway)sethb wrote:It's available now on Amazon, for $3 more than the Warner website price. And if you live outside of Canada and can't get Warner Archive titles direct from WB, you can also order from Deep Discount DVD, Movies Unlimited (who often have good deals on Archive titles), and Oldies.com. Recently I was able to get some Archive discs for $12.99 from Movies Unlimited (no big sale on either Forbidden Hollywood or the W&W sets I wanted though).

Just to mention that ImportCDs has bigger discounts than Amazon right now on the Forbidden Hollywood sets. I don't know if this is their usual discount, but it's 32 percent or more off, plus shipping. They ship to Canada and many other countries unless the product has export restrictions.

Good to see Downstairs get a proper release in Forbidden Hollywood #6. It's a lovely piece of black comedy from John Gilbert, which proves he was more than a romantic silent leading man.
