"FREDDIE JAMES" World's Worst Juggler Down Under
The Mail (Adelaide, SA) May 13, 1916
'THE WORST JUGGLER.'
FREDDIE JAMES'S CAREER.
"Let me say this," said Freddie James, "the world's worst juggler," now at the King's Theatre, "I set out once to be the very best juggler, and went into active training. Then one day I met Cinquevalli, and be took me to lunch. I had never seen Cinquevalli's act. After lunch he said, 'Come over to the theatre while I practice up a bit.' So I went, and the things he did all at once with a cannon ball, a feather, and a spring dray made me feel sick of life. I bade him good-bye, and the first man I met outside was W. C. Fields. He was just going in to do his matinee turn at a music hall opposition to Cinquevalli's place. Says he, 'Come in and watch me try some new tricks for the first time in public.' So I went, and the way he juggled two bicycle tires, a lighted lamp, and four penny stamps simultaneously gave me a feeling like two blizzards down the back. I rushed straight to the nearest bar, and, raising a whisky cocktail in my right hand, swore I would never try to be a good juggler again. And as there was no way out for me I just switched right round and became the world's worst juggler."
