New Book: The 1921 "Lost" DISRAELI

I'm pleased to announce the publication of my new book, the fourth volume in our George Arliss series. This time we've corralled as many photos from the 1921 silent version of DISRAELI as we could obtain to reconstruct the narrative. Also included is the souvenir play program from 1912, the complete set of lobby cards from the 1929 talkie version, a discussion of Mr. A's 1938 DISRAELI radio broadcast with links to hear the actual show, and a "bonus" appendix with 3-D views of George Arliss in various roles. Over 80 rare color and b/w illustrations, with bibliography and index. 8.5x11 inches, 122 pages

Fragments survive at the Eastman House and perhaps in a Moscow, Russia archive. A complete or substantially complete print is not known to exist at this time but I am hoping this will change. A few years ago a print of Mr. A's first film, THE DEVIL (1921), was found in Canada and I've since viewed it at LOC. The quotation marks reflect the author's optimism.

Or a private collector might have (part of) it. It's optimistic, but it's always possible. These things happen, but rarely to the movies that we are waiting for in particular. By the way, does the 1916 version still exist?

There is so much photo material from the lost 1917 Cleopatra that a photo reconstruction has been made. I was able to see it, and it was more creatively done than just a slide show. Still I suppose it wasn't that difficult to make, technically. Perhaps something like that is a thought for future projects?

I read the book yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Here's a Disraeli still I picked up several months ago. It was interesting to see a variant of it in your book:

Thanks very much, LC, and I appreciate your posting a review on Amazon. The book is narrowly focused on one film, and a film we cannot view today. But in telling the back story it takes in a lot of ground and I think that's what makes the book interesting.
