Cohen THIEF to Premiere on TCM Sunday?

Post by Gagman 66 » Thu Jul 04, 2013 3:39 pm

:? So does anyone know if TCM will be debuting the Cohen Restoration of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD on Sunday withe Carl Davis for the first time? I bought both the DVD and Blu-ray, but I still want to know? Need to be sure to mention it to people on the TCM Boards. I assume that they will be running the new version, but can we get some confirmation about this? Thanks.

Oh yeah, HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY to everybody!

While I can't say for sure, I'm guessing that TCM will be running the Gaylord Carter version on Sunday. The TCM schedule indicates that the 1934 Technicolor short "La Cucaracha" starts at 2:24 am (ET). Since the Cohen Media/Carl Davis version runs about 155 minutes, there wouldn't be enough time to air Cohen version since that is supposed to start at midnight. However, there is enough time for the older Gaylord Carter version (which runs about fifteen minutes shorter due to the faster frame rate). I guess that there is still the possibility that they are planning to run the new version but that the scheduling was done with the running time of the Gaylord Carter version in mind (which would mean some last minute reshuffling since they couldn't play La Cucaracha then).

I don't know what version TCM is showing but Netflix is streaming the Cohen edition right now. Watched a few minutes on my ipad and it looks terrific.

I just tuned in for a moment, and it's the Gaylord Carter version (which I think Kino did distribute on VHS and laserdisc some years ago).

:? All I know tis that the guy from Cohen specifically stated here on Nitrateville that TCM would be showing their version. So, when the film was on the schedule again, what was I supposed to think? Maybe in September when THIEF is being aired again in Prime-time? Who knows?

Speaking of September, the new restoration of THE BIG PARADE premieres in Prime-time on The 25th of that month. About a week in advance of the DVD and Blu-ray release. They are also runnign Hitchcock's THE LODGER.
