THE FRESHMAN- Janus Films Trailer with New Carl Davis score.

Post by Gagman 66 » Wed Nov 13, 2013 3:59 pm

:) Another restoration of Harold Lloyd's THE FRESHMAN is coming from Janus films. This will be released on DVD and Blu-ray by Criterion next year. As I mentioned several months ago, Carl Davis composed a new score for the movie. I wondered at the time if that would be included? The answer is, indeed it will be. However, now I am curious to know if Robert Israel's score has been entirely replaced, or will be kept in as an alternate track? I hope the latter. I have grown used to Robert's score. Here is a new trailer from Janus films. Well done, but I'm not happy with it, as it gives to much away for my taste.

I only care if they offer the alternative opening titles from Paramount.

I notice the trailer is in 16:9 ratio. I do hope the film will not be cropped to this format?

Jorge,

:o The domestic release was distributed by Pathe. Harold's final film for them. I was surprised that subsequent foreign releases, and presumably the British version were marketed by Paramount.

Thanks for posting! I would imagine that the Robert Israel score will be provided as an alternate track much like Gaylord Carter's organ score was provided as an alternate track for Criterion's blu ray of Safety Last. Besides the Israel score, there may be a Gaylord Carter score for the Freshman (I think it may have been recorded for an early 1950s reissue, but I'm not entirely sure). It would be nice to hear that score too (I imagine that seamless branching would have to be used to account for the cuts that Lloyd made for the 1950s reissue). Besides that, it would be nice if Criterion also includes The Funny Side of Life version of the The Freshman.

LC,

:) I always liked the Walter Scharf score to THE FRESHMAN in THE FUNNY SIDE OF LIFE (1963). Yes, some of it is to 50's and 60's documentary like sounding. But the scoring of "The Fall Frolic" and "The Day Of The Big Game" sequences is outstanding. I could do without the excessive sound effects. I still have a soft spot for this score because it was the first music I ever heard for the movie.

This is actually Carl Davis second score to THE FRESHMAN. The first one was written in 1995 and featured a Jazz Sexette of only 6 players. It was performed live on a hand ful of occasions up to about 2001. I'm told that the score could be heard on an old Japanese Laser disc version of THE FRESHMAN. I never heard or saw a copy. There was supposed to be a CD of the score from Faber Muisc in the U. K.

With the exception of the one vocal song, I thought that Walter Scharf's score was fine. Also, I think that the Funny Side of Life version of the Freshman is taken from the domestic cut. Since Criterion will probably be using the UCLA restoration which is largely (but not entirely) taken from the foreign cut, it would be nice to include the Funny Side of Life version as a supplement to allow for comparisons between the foreign and domestic versions. Any differences would probably be minor, but it would still be nice to compare the two.

How does the foreign cut differ from the domestic one?
Just the very slightly different takes/angles for the second camera?
Different editing from a re-release?

Everything that was released from Harold after 1925 was distributed around the world by Paramount, including SAFETY LAST and WHY WORRY? too. I have found ads from Australia, France, Argentina and Spain with this information.

As I can tell you for now, the foreign cut will have a Paramount opening, instead of Pathé. In Australia the film was renamed COLLEGE DAYS.

 Huh, what's this? Apparently we are going to be getting a new score by Carl Davis for WHY WORRY? as well? It will be performed live at the TCM Classic Film Festival next year. I feel sorry for Robert Israel having all his scores replaced. Now he knows how Jim Parker and Adrian Johnston must have felt when he replaced their scores for GIRL SHY and HOT WATER respectively in 2002. :-[ I'm still clamoring after those.Chances are there will be fresh Davis scores for them to boot! Good Lord!

I'm not complaining mind you, but can we score something that hasn't already been scored instead? Like THE PATENT LEATHER KID or LILAC TIME per chance? Maybe FORBIDDEN PARADISE, THREE WOMEN or THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD? I personally feel that Robert's score for WHY WORRY? is terrific. I love his score to GRANDMAS BOY. They wouldn't dare? Can't imagine that a Davis score could be any better. Just saying.
