Say What's On Your Holiday Wish List and Win Cinerama!

Post by Mike Gebert » Fri Dec 13, 2013 9:00 am

It's that season again, and NitrateVille wants to know what you're hoping for this holiday season. Movies? Books? Recordings? Autographed photos of Belle Poitrine? Whatever it is, tell us in this thread (and inspire others in their shopping, too).

And our friends at Flicker Alley have a little incentive for you to tell us— well, not exactly little, in fact it's Cinerama sized! I'll draw two names from among everyone who posts their holiday wishes here, and each will win one of the new Cinerama titles in Smilebox blu-ray/DVD combo sets:

Image

From bobsledding in the Alps to motorbiking across the West, the Cinerama cameras never stop in this second Cinerama adventure from 1955, as an American couple sees Europe for the first time and a Swiss couple crosses the U.S.

Image

The exotic South Pacific region is captured by Cinerama in colorful episodes ranging from skiing in New Zealand (watch out for Orcs) to surfing and even bungee-jumping. There are also women in grass skirts and the voice of Orson Welles.

So post your holiday wish list, and I'll pick a winner on December 24th. Thanks again to Flicker Alley.

And me? My wish list includes Little Man, What Now? and the Bob & Ray biography Bob and Ray, Keener Than Most Persons.

What I want for the holidays is for it to get not so frickin' cold.

At first, I thought that said 'old'.

Ditto for me, except I'd add what I thought Bob had originally written. Fat chance for either - eh, Santa?

I'd like a new refrigerator. And I'd really like for big cats, elephants, and rhinos in the wild to make a startling comeback in numbers this year. And The Uninvited Blu Ray.

While you're at it, how about no more holes in the upper atmosphere. After all, aerosol cans of shaving cream made the lotion come out much more uniformly...

World peace would also be good, but I'm not holding my breath on any of this stuff.

I already have the Bob and Ray book so my next wish would be for someone to come and finally go through all my videotapes I've had sitting in boxes for close to 6 years

I have had lots of Happy Christmases over the years. All I would like is for someone who has not had a happy time of it this year to have one nice, happy day.

Excuse I, and forgive me if I appear 'iggorant' - but how does one look at a film photographed in the Cinerama process on a television set? Do you get three DVD's and then have to line up three television sets with three DVD players side by side and try and get the three DVD's to work simultaneously? I am intrigued - because (a) if the picture was panned and scanned, you would miss out on a lot and (b) if it was shown in letter box format - the actual picture area would be so small you wouldn't be able to see what you are looking at? Just intrigued.

I know it seems like a gimmick, but it's surprisingly effective. I've enjoyed all of them so far (as should be obvious by now given the masthead, etc.) I should also note that the color correction is better on the released versions, and the differences between panels are, though not invisible, substantially less (see here).

Thanks for posting this. Quite a novel way of doing it. One would immediately think that the movement on the left and right screens would be somewhat distorted - but it isn't. Must have been corrected. Funny how the eye compensates and makes you feel that this is more real than a normal flat widescreen image. Maybe "normal" pictures will be done in this way for added realism? :D

I saw the dates on the bottom of some of the films - gee whiz - was it really that long ago! :(

Is this what a gramophone (phonograph if you are in America) is called these days? This political correctness is getting into everything! :D
