Parodies of Rudolph Valentino in silent comedies

Post by rudyfan » Tue Jun 24, 2014 10:38 am

I need some help from the comedy guys here. I'm working up a comprehensive list of films in which Valentino is parodied. I'm talking short films, not, references in passing.

The obvious ones are:

Will Rogers Big Moments from Little Pictures
Stan Laurel Mud and Sand and Monsieur Don't Care
Ben Turpin The Shriek of Araby

I'm also wondering if there are similar films of foreign origin, not widely known in the US. Anyone know?

Many thanks!

Will Rogers poked fun at Rudy in another two-reeler, Uncensored Movies (1923).

Johnny Arthur dresses up as a sheik for his Valentino-loving girl in My Stars (1926) directed by Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle (uncredited).

This one is a maybe. There is a silent Our Gang short where the kids impersonate a bunch of the movie stars of the time. I don't recall if they did Valentino or not, and I can't remember the name of the short. That was helpful, huh?

I don't know any more about it, but there's a photo of Baby Peggy parodying Valentino in The Sheik here: http://www.moviediva.com/MD_root/review ... Babies.htm

To follow up on my earlier post, the Our Gang short was The Big Show, and Valentino was not one of the stars impersonated.

Beat me to it. "Rodolf Vaselino in Throwing the Bull in Six Parts." It's "Rodolf" on the outdoor poster, "Rodolph" on the title card of the movie.

Here's the movie, though it's not a great transfer. The segment with Valentino starts at about 3:43.

I've always liked this movie because we get to see the movie theater orchestra. Whether it's Disney being lazy, or whether it was the practice in Kansas City Theaters at the time, it's curious that the orchestra plays an overture and exit music but does not actually accompany the film.

Just came across another one - The Son of Sheik (1922), a Christie comedy. Not sure if it's extant.

Maybe not a parody, but Frank Mayo plays a movie sheik in Souls for Sale (1923) where he finds Eleanor Boardman lost in the desert. They strike a few poses that seem based on Valentino and Ayres.
