Film Journals/Newspapers/Magazines non-US origin
Film Journals/Newspapers/Magazines non-US origin
I'm looking for some help or direction for material that is NOT from the US. I'm hoping to find reviews for US films from other countries, including Russia, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Italy, France, UK, China, heck anywhere. Is there a source anyone knows of? Of course, then I will struggle with any translations......
So is there a list someplace? An online source like an international Lantern Media?

Donna: Not sure how far back they go, but under IMDb External Reviews you can access writeups in foreign languages.

I don't know is there a place where to find Finnish reviews but I have some movie magazines from 20's. I'm not able to scan them right now but if you know some film/films you want a review, just tell me and I'll check what I can find.

No such link in Denmark. Serious film reviewing didn´t begin in Denmark until long after Valentinos death.

This may be far more work that you are willing or able to do but there are runs of two early Japanese film journals from the mid-teens through the late 1920s--Kinema rekōdo (The Cinema Record, 1913-1917) and Kinema Junpo (Cinema Bi-weekly, 1919-1925).
These are reprints of the original journals featuring illustrations, posters, and features from promotional materials provided by the US majors. The journal's coverage includes an impressive array of mostly US films followed by some French, Italian (until the late teens), and German titles. All of the major films produced during this period appear in the journal as do--more intriguingly--many minor films which are now forgotten. For instance, Japanese intellectuals were fascinated by Universal's Bluebird series and although these are largely forgotten in English language works, these journals offer a wealth of information on individual titles in the series.
Unfortunately, the journals are all in Japanese.
If you are still interested, several US university libraries own these, so you might try an interlibrary loan. Just keep in mind, however, that some libraries may not lend periodicals.
Good luck--

This is information I posted on FaceBook but I don’t know if you were able to get access. The digitization of the journals both "A Scena Muda" and "e Cinearte" from the Brazilian Film Archives was uploaded to the internet a few years ago. The reaction to Valentino might be interesting to read, if you can translate the Portuguese. The sites are easy to navigate. www.bjksdigital.museusegall.org.br From the front page, click on As Revistas (magazines). You will then be presented with three drop-down boxes-choose from the two journals; select to browse by year or number, and select the range.

The 'Danske Filminstitut' offers 7 years [1912-1919] of the Danish, bi-monthly, magazine 'Filmen'.poul wrote:No such link in Denmark. Serious film reviewing didn´t begin in Denmark until long after Valentinos death.
