Wizard Of Oz - Rifftrax

Post by Danny » Tue Sep 02, 2014 8:45 am

This may sound like treason but has anyone dared to watch The Wizard Of Oz by the Rifftrax gang? At first I couldn't believe they had the rights to riff the classic 1939 MGM feature, but there it was, before my very own eyes, with the guys making with the wisecracks.

Personally I am a big fan of the original Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3K). They blasted all those low budget, cheesy, grade Z horror flicks. That's fair game. But to go down the yellow brick road ... well, that is something quite different.

I wonder if Gone With The Wind Will be next?

They don't have the "rights." What they're offering are their riffs as a sound file that the viewer can download and play back in loose sync while watching the film. The short clips from "Oz" on their website probably fall under "fair use."

Popular hits and classics have always been fair game for parody. As to GWTW, I remember a sketch on the old Carol Burnett show lampooning that film. I agree with you, however, and prefer the riffing of cheesy movies.

I'll say this for Rifftrax, they made watching Titanic bearable.
