'Meet Me in St. Louis' casting question

Post by Wm. Charles Morrow » Sun Nov 30, 2014 5:50 pm

I revisited this film via TCM yesterday, after many years, and enjoyed it. Then I took a look at the IMDb page, and was startled to find the name of Joe Cobb in the cast list. That would be Joe Cobb of the Our Gang comedies, mostly during the silent era, but I don’t believe he’s in Meet Me in St. Louis. The scene in question is the Christmas party towards the end of the movie, when Judy has to dance with several undesirable partners, including a short pudgy fellow named Clinton Badger. This, supposedly, is Joe Cobb, but in my opinion that's an error. To me, the guy playing Clinton Badger resembled the short, pudgy fellow who danced opposite Judy in Ziegfeld Girl (1941), in the “Minnie from Trinidad” number. Does anyone here know the guy’s name? I checked IMDb for that film, but didn’t find a likely candidate.

Sergio Orta is the guy but it appears he was back in Mexico by 1943/44.

Thanks for the info, Lamar. I'll need to compare those scenes back to back, and see if Sergio Orta might be the performer in Meet Me in St. Louis. It may not be him, but I'm 99% certain it isn't Joe Cobb, either.
