Where Art Thou... History Is Made At Night?

Post by Phillyrich » Tue Jul 21, 2015 8:11 am

I thought that two years ago HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937) was coming out on a Criterion disc. Never saw it.

What happened? Is there a copyright issue? Lack of good film elements? Am I stuck with my vhs tape forever? (At least its not beta.)

HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT has been on YT for some time, uploaded in four parts. Condition looks far from ideal, but may suffice until the real thing comes along...

HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT is available in a much better print as part of the Criterion Collection on Hulu.com, and you can watch it if you have Hulu Plus (only $7.99 a month -- and worth every penny!).

I bought a DVD of Portuguese origin a few years ago. Spanish subtitles defaulted but you could click them off. The picture quality was the best I had ever seen of this film though still not what might be called "MGM quality" for DVD. Awhile back I checked and found this edition is OOP and going for big bucks. I think I paid $8. It's nice to hear about the various UCLA restorations but for those of us, i.e., most of us, who don't live nearby such showings might as well be on the moon. The question really is whether Criterion or a similar company will come to terms with UCLA and get this one into circulation. HISTORY is one of the few titles from the 1930s that while deserving of the label "classic" so many people who are otherwise fans of 30s films have never heard of it.

It has been shown at least once on TCM (US) on November 18, 2012.
So there weren't rights problems at that time.
A request could be put in for another showing.
