Re daveismyhero's thread, 'What was the Last Film (Silent or Talkie) You Purchased?', it seemed a similar thread on books would be interesting, unless it's been done before. To start the ball rolling:
'The Films of Nicholas Ray', by Geoff Andrew and
'The British Cinema Book', edited by Robert Murphy were both charity shop finds, and from an establishment where the prices are usually eye-watering.
'Howard Hawks', by Robin Wood (Amazon - my copy got trashed years ago when my old flat was flooded)

Really & truly...I don't often buy or read film books; not with books it seemed urgent for me to have read 2 or 3 years ago piled on almost every flat surface throughout my house, still untouched. But a few months ago someone here extolled the merits of Eyman's Speed of Sound, which I bought, & found to be absolutely extraordinary, far exceeding my expectations about what it might cover & explain.

Is this one of those "buying" vs. "checking out from the library?" things?earlytalkiebuffRob wrote:Re daveismyhero's thread, 'What was the Last Film (Silent or Talkie) You Purchased?', it seemed a similar thread on books would be interesting, unless it's been done before. To start the ball rolling:

Somewhere I might have an earlier topic regarding one's home library of movie books. Anyway, my latest acquisition is not entirely movie connected, but it's terrific--THE HIRSCHFELD CENTURY, a new book on artist Al Hirschfeld. It has many movie posters he illustrated, plus portraits of stars throughout.

If checking out from the library leads to a purchase, yes. And I think some gifts can count, if the giver knows a book one is after, although doubts were raised when I mentioned that my copy of James Card's 'Seductive Cinema' was a Fathers' Day present from the cat...Frederica wrote:Is this one of those "buying" vs. "checking out from the library?" things?earlytalkiebuffRob wrote:Re daveismyhero's thread, 'What was the Last Film (Silent or Talkie) You Purchased?', it seemed a similar thread on books would be interesting, unless it's been done before. Re: What was the Last Cinema Book You Purchased / Acquired?
My last purchase was Warner Bros.: Hollywood's Ultimate Backlot by Steve Bingen. Bingen really has captured a niche in the market with this book (and the MGM book). It is very well researched and the photos look great because the paper is a better quality.
I am hoping that Cari Beauchamp attends Cinecon so I can buy her latest book called My First Time in Hollywood.
