King Vidor's "Hallelujah" (1929)

Post by David Alp » Thu Nov 26, 2015 1:08 pm

I am trying to order the official Warner's version of "Hallelujah!" (1929) from Amazon.co.uk, and am wondering if its the same version that is on Amazon.com? There is a large disparity in price for a start which is confusing me? On Amazon.UK its only £6.95 and free delivery (for orders over £20) and yet on Amazon.US it is $29.95. Is it the same one? Here is the artwork, which looks different to me?

Those undecipherable markings at the bottom of the UK case suffice to account for the cost difference.

The Amazon UK one appears to be from Korea and the site says that it has optional Korean titles.
I can't tell if it's an official Warners release nor if it's the same transfer.
It does say that it can be imported to the USA, so maybe Warners is OK with it.

Might be worth the risk, especially if you can return it if unhappy.

There are less expensive listings on the Amazon USA page, like a used disc in like new condition for $8.20, as well as new ones for around 10 to 12 dollars, but I'm not sure if you could purchase these in England. I've made many purchases of "like new" or "very good" condition discs, and only twice out of maybe 40 purchases have I not been satisfied with the condition. Then again, the shipping for England would be more expensive.

So have I, countless times, & even more classical CDs, with no complaints that I can recall. On the other hand, I've brought quite a few new, shrink-wrapped CDs, that were defective (skipped) on their first playing.

You'll probably see some price differences on this title because the manufactured DVD of "Hallelujah" is out of print. It was replaced by a MOD dvd from the Warner Archives line.

Thanks guys.

I'm bamboozled actually? I can't believe that every single copy of "Hallelujah" from the UK Amazon is utilizing the Korean Artwork! I am wondering to myself that somewhere-along-the-line, someone took a photo of the Korean copy artwork, and that copy has somehow "stuck" on Amazon.co.uk. (The same principal as what can sometimes happen with Amazon "customer reviews" being all amalgamated and thrown together for a film title no matter be it for a restored version, or a VHS version, or DVD version, or Blu-ray version etc etc).

I just checked Amazon.com and it's listed as from from $4.99 used.... but that's with $4 shipping. There is one listed as $8.20, with free shipping, which sounds like the Amazon.co,uk offer.

Thanks so much Bob. I used to ALWAYS price-compare between Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, but just recently U.S. Amazon.com has added a "tax" charge to the bill, just as one is checking-out. (The UK site doesn't have this - any tax is included in the price of the item, not hidden till the end). So I'm kinda put off by the U.S site now. Plus when one is ordering from the UK, you never know right until the last second (as you are checking out) what the shipping fee's to the UK are going to be, and sometimes they can be quite high. However i DO want to get the right version to "Hallelujah" so I will buy from Amazon.com on this occasion. Thanks for the advice.
