There's a book on the Marx Brothers by Simon Louvish which offers a 1909 photo of Margaret Dumont, back when she was a showgirl known as "Daisy." She stares directly into the camera lens with a 'Hey, Big Boy' look. In her earliest movie appearances Mme. Dumont was still a handsome woman, but young Daisy Dumont was startlingly attractive.

Not the 'Hey, Big Boy' look, but close to the same year. Undoubtedly had her share of Stage-Door Johnnies. (In fact, that was about the same time young Billy Hearst was a regular at all the best stage-doors.)



And here's a lady I much admire, also on the stage but about a decade later, who preserved her looks a little more successfully:

Reminds me of a conversation in my shop which centred around the likes of Irene Handl, Doris Hare, Peggy Mount, Dandy Nicholls, etc, on the lines of "Who played the charlady in...." Luckily we weren't overheard, but at leas this shows that discussions of this kind are not confined to Blighty.
