Re: The Year 1910 in Film
Thanks Greta. That was quick! As I went through imbd's lists of films released in 1910 I thought it was safe to skip titles with no ratings but now I see that's a lazy approach. Can you recommend any reference materials that might be an easier way for me to compile my lists. I'm trying to do this for every year from 1888 to the present.

Re: The Year 1910 in Film
Neither should you assume that, just because a movie has ratings, it is extant. There is an unfortunate number of titles with ratings and even reviews that have truly not been seen for decades, even a century for 1910 films.

Thanks. I noticed that that most of the films you posted had either Norma Talmadge or Clara Kimball in them. I'm still impressed by how quickly you found the films missing from my list!

Re: The Year 1910 in Film
There are hundreds of films from 1910 that survive but are not on DVD. Making a list of 1910 films available on DVD/BluRay is a useful exercise, but for all surviving films you'll need access to the FIAF archive database.

Here's By the Faith of a Child (Vitagraph)
Looks like Maurice Costello, i haven't watched the whole thing. There are probably a lot in the Eye collection online but i haven't figured out a good way to find them.

Thanks Bruce. I listed the films in print in case someone knew where I could find any of them on DVD or streaming online. I just keep a record of them to check once in a while to see if any have made their way to DVD.

Re: The Year 1910 in Film
Yours is a laudable though Sisyphean task, Dan. For starters, I regularly see silent features and shorts at various film festivals and, when later looking them up online, see that they appear not to exist! IMDb, understandably, has massive holes everywhere and in the case of the BFI, not all of its holdings are even listed in its own database. The same pattern repeats in archives around the world.
I'd have thought far more practical, and useful, would be to isolate a single actor or filmmaker and try to list their entire filmography and/or ascertain what is actually available to view in one form or another.
You've got some really great reviews on your blog; you should set up a proper site!

Re: The Year 1910 in Film
Thanks Brent! Yes, I've noticed there are films not listed on imdb, etc. In my index their titles are in B&W because I had no reference site to link to. I also realize that the task I've set for myself would take more than one lifetime to complete on my own but it keeps me out of trouble. It may be possible to at least list nearly all films from the silent era that are available for home viewing but even that would need to be constantly updated due to new discoveries and releases. BTW, I just discovered this http://www.filmsomniac.com/years which may prove very helpful. Thank you for the compliment on my reviews. What would the advantage be to setting up a proper site over blogging?
Best regards,
Dan

Re: The Year 1910 in Film
The differences and pros and cons of blogs vs sites are a big subject and you'd be better off doing a search. There are some great sites (and blogs!) which go into some detail. Personally, I'm not a fan of the blog format: I think it was already dated when it appeared in the 1990s and it seems like more of an anachronism with each passing year.
On a practical level, just two things to consider, are:
The bottom line is before investing lots more time and effort into what you've got, find out for sure whether it's suitable for what you need. If you intended generating masses of future content that you intend to be navigable, I sincerely doubt that's the case. There's a reason why Wikipedia and IMDb are not blogs! Good luck.
On a practical level, just two things to consider, are:
- Navigation is clumsy and awkward; older posts get buried more or less irretrievably, at least as far as the average reader is concerned. The more content you generate, the worse it gets, you've got some hidden gems on your site, but I really had to go digging for them!
- All single-author blogs suffer entropy eventually. True, a multi-author blog is an option, but multi-author sites have infinitely more possibilities.

Re: The Year 1908 in Film
F. Percy Smith's The Acrobatic Fly (originally titled The Balancing Bluebottle) did not appear in 1910 but in 1908. It was first shown at the the Palace Theatre of Varieties in London's Cambridge Circus in late September-October 1908. It was reshown under the new title (the first show had not gone well) on 11 November at the Royal Photographic Society. The 1910 date is when it was shwn in the US after producer Charles Urban had arranged to have it linked with a US anti-fly campaign for which Smith made anothe film The Fly Pest in 1909. Both films were released in the US in 1910.
Re: The Year 1910 in Film
Hi Dan:
I looked at your site - wow, that's a big project you have going there! I agree with Brent on the proper site versus the blog although you could probably split it up - keep your Wordpress blog, obviously, and use something else for the actual website.
It doesn't have to be anything fancy, and most websites use a content management system of some kind, but if all you need is a minimum number of pages, you could get by with a combination of client-side and server-side coding, like HTML5, CSS3, PHP, Javascript, Python, etc.
I have both http://Aventurasdetomtyler.com and http://triggertomblog.blogspot.com - the latter is the marketing tool. I went with Google Blog because it is free and I do not really need anything fancy.
By the way I clicked on the following in your original post on the thread and got an error reading of:

Re: The Year 1910 in Film
Thanks aguntuk. I'll update my index. And thanks Mary. WP changed all the URLs since I posted that link four years ago. I will update my original post. BTW, since I made that post four years ago I've decided to include lost films and films held in archives but not available on DVD or online in the index.
