Cary Grant collection (w/new 30s titles) in April

Post by Harold Aherne » Wed Feb 10, 2016 6:24 pm

In the last couple of years, Universal has released box sets for Bing Crosby, W. C. Fields and Mae West that gather most of these stars' previously-released titles into one package, in each case including movies that are new to pressed DVDs and even putting If I Had a Million in the Fields set. On 19 April they plan to release a collection of Cary Grant's 1932-36 Paramounts, with 5 titles never before on home video: Madame Butterfly, Woman Accused, Gambling Ship, Ladies Should Listen and Enter Madame.

This set includes 18 of the 21 movies he did for Paramount in that four-year span. In fact, of the remaining three, only Sinners in the Sun remains unavailable. Nancy Carroll is his co-star in Hot Saturday and Woman Accused, while Charles Ray has one of his larger talkie roles in Ladies Should Listen.

Brilliant news – thank you! Six discs, with three films apiece; shame they couldn't have stretched to a seventh, for those last three, and made this set truly complete. I know they're the TCM-owned ones, but why not reach a deal, for the greater good? It's always (so) close but no cigar with these things. Oh well, fantastic news nonetheless.
