Chaplin recalls this accident in his autobiography and claims the newspapers had greatly exaggerated the scope of it. He promptly issued a denial, "but few papers printed it" (p. 259).

Well, this Chaplin stuff is mildly interesting, but I want to know about those scientists who performed sex-change operations in 1921.

The one that intrigued me was the school head quitting ahead of scandal inquiry—that's a real Chicago kind of story—so I searched the name, Alexander Sherriffs. I didn't find any more about his scandal... but this sure looks like his son might have gone into the same line of work and had his own experiences with the law, after his own fashion.
