Image Entertainment releases

Post by p00gz » Sun Jan 08, 2017 1:32 pm

Hello all,
I am creating a database of sorts and am looking to see if anyone has or knows of a list of silent films distributed by Image Entertainment. These seem to be of higher quality than other releases and noticeably ripped off by other distributors and sold at a lower quality. Also for someone newer to this genre than most, what is the connection between BlackHawk and Image?
thanks!

David Shepard took over BlackHawk Films many years ago and released films through Image. You can read about the history of Blackhawk Films here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackhawk_Films" target="_blank

He now works through Flicker Alley. I don't know if he releases through other companies.

Some years ago I made a list of David Shepard's releases through Image. It probably has some errors:

A number of the out-of-print Image titles are now available as "manufacture on demand" DVDs from Flicker Alley.

There was a point in the late 2000's at which Image got out of releasing silents. I recall that AllDay's Becoming Charley Chase set was originally supposed to be released by Image (they'd done AllDay's Langdon set), and then the game changed, and AllDay wound up working out a deal with VCI.

One good source is the Film Aficionado website. Entering "Image Entertainment" under Publisher, and "silent" under Genre, yields the following:

http://www.filmaf.com/search.html?pub=I ... ent*rgn_us" target="_blank" target="_blank

Note that this list includes the first several years of Milestone releases and even some of the earliest Kino DVDs. Image hasn't issued many silents since 2007, however -- just two "Treasures" sets, a reissue of the Slapstick Encyclopedia, and a Blu-Ray of Phantom of the Opera.

You can also search by year (e.g. <1930), but this approach will exclude compilations.

David himself is on this site and occasionally posts. Perhaps he would be gracious enough to review your list and provide any missing titles?

I hope so. He's done a service to art and an amazing amount of work. I hope he wins any awards possible.

Many of the titles above were first put out as laserdiscs, including Nosferatu. For complicated reasons, the supplemental tracks to that disc worked better than when we revamped it for the DVD version.

Wow, thanks guys for all the info, it really helped. Harold, the Film Aficionado site was exactly what I was looking for. Also, I wish I had know about the Flicker Alley on demand release before I bought my Salome (Nazimova) from amazon... Oh well. Anyone seen Dont Change Your Husband/Golden Chance anywhere reasonable? its going for like $45 right now.....

Thanks, Rodney. Our Manufactured-On-Demand (MOD) titles are available at http://www.flickeralley.com/mod.

Additionally, we announce new MOD titles about once a month in our e-mail newsletter.

I'm afraid the promo code in the above video is no longer available, but it shows a nice montage of clips from our various MOD titles.
