MARION DAVIES DAY on TCM
MARION DAVIES DAY on TCM
Remember August 29 on TCM is Marion Davies Day.
Films in the all-day salute will include Ben Model's fabulous restoration of When Knighthood Was in Flower as well as my Kickstarter projects Enchantment and The Bride's Play. And if you've never seen them, three more Terrific silents: The Red Mill, Show People, and The Patsy.

Thanks Ed for the reminder. I have never seen The Red Mill. I set it to record.

Perhaps uneven, but overall quite good. Beautiful cinematography.mwalls wrote:Thanks Ed for the reminder. I have never seen The Red Mill. I set it to record.

Watching the last screening of Show People, I noticed, during the finale, a very funny musical gag in the original Axt and Mendoza score using the love theme from The Big Parade. Jack Theakston discussed it back in 2009.

Excellent contemporary synchronized score. Full of surprises. The Thames version with Carl Davis score uses the Hollywood documentary music.Eric Cohen wrote:Watching the last screening of Show People, I noticed, during the finale, a very funny musical gag in the original Axt and Mendoza score using the love theme from The Big Parade. When Knighthood Was in Flower, Enchantment and The Bride's Play all sourced from 35mm elements preserved by and scanned by the Library of Congress.drednm wrote:Remember August 29 on TCM is Marion Davies Day.

Re: MARION DAVIES DAY on TCM
Watched Operator 13 for the first time today. With all that's going on today about Confederate relics, it was nice to hear again the patriotic acceptance of both North and South at the end of that awful War.
Marion Davies shines throughout as does Gary Cooper. They both had a strong presence on film. I was enchanted too by all the beautiful southern belles and happy to see Hatti McDaniel if only briefly in the film.
Very good story and another Davies feature for my collection.

Davies' last film at MGM. I made more than $1M at the box office.Big Silent Fan wrote:Watched Operator 13 for the first time today. With all that's going on today about Confederate relics, it was nice to hear again the patriotic acceptance of both North and South at the end of that awful War.

There seems to be a claim -- on the IMDb at any rate -- that it was the first Marion Davies film to gross more than a million dollars. What, then, are we to make of claims of the success of When Knighthood Was in Flower?

Not likely the first as both When Knighthood Was in Flower and Little Old New York ranked in the top ten for 1922 and 1923 among films earning well over $2M.... and that was 15 years before Operator 13.boblipton wrote:There seems to be a claim -- on the IMDb at any rate -- that it was the first Marion Davies film to gross more than a million dollars. Love the first time showings, but why do they never show The Fair Co-ed?
