I've enjoyed my old VHS copy (now dubbed to DVD) since before 2000.

Quite right, and his score included banjo music as we watched the young boy sing "Oh! Susanna" in the opening scene. [I had to have a look to be sure I was right.]cuzzoni wrote:You had me at Gaylord Carter score

From the link: "Nothing was spared in the making of it ..." Standard studio hype, but quite a contrast to today's "No animals were harmed in the making of ..." disclaimers.Big Silent Fan wrote:I've enjoyed my old VHS copy (now dubbed to DVD) since before 2000.

Never seen this one and was ordered 24 hours ago.
Re: THE COVERED WAGON coming from Kino in 2018
From the running time, it appears this is the same abridged version issued from Paramount years ago.
I read there was a buffalo hunt that was cut, along with some other scenes.
Does anyone have any info on this?

I remember in The Hollywood series we were treated to music from Carl Davis during The Covered Wagon segment and it was quite good. It would be nice if he could score the film for it's video release.

If it is the same version, there's no reason why the buffalo hunt would be removed. On my older copy (originally VHS), the hunt begins with an intertitle at 0:50:40 and runs about four minutes. There's an important part of the story seen mixed in with the hunt where a shirtless Ernest Torrence first rescues Allan Hale from sinking quicksand and then tries to put him back before the hero, J. Warren Kerrigan intervenes.TheAvon wrote:From the running time, it appears this is the same abridged version issued from Paramount years ago.

Perhaps the newly restored DVD/Blu-ray offers several different scores to choose from? There's certainly nothing wrong with the original organ score/banjo music done by Gaylord Carter for the video.
Re: THE COVERED WAGON coming from Kino in 2018
I have both the VHS and the laserdisc, but haven't watched them in years. Maybe its not the buffalo hunt I am thinking about, but I seem to recall a long-ago article in Classic Film Collector or Classic Images that stated this was an abridged print if its the same.

The original print had a prairie fire sequence that's advertised on some posters, but is missing from all known surviving prints. Could that be what you're referring to?

Re: THE COVERED WAGON coming from Kino in 2018
Looking at a few listings, the new Kino disc says it's 98 minutes. The LoC silent film database says 9407 ft, which would run about 104 minutes at 90 ft/minute. Close; it could be missing a few minutes, or perhaps the footage total includes leader, etc.
There was a 5-reel Kodascope version that circulated for many years. It was abridged like most Kodascope features. Perhaps that's the abridgement that older references refer to.

Maybe it was the Kodascope version I'm thinking about. In any event, my BluRay order was just placed with Amazon!

Re: THE COVERED WAGON coming from Kino in 2018
There were DVD copies of Kino The Covered Wagon (1923) for sale at the Kansas Silent Film Festival this last weekend, but no BluRays. The DVDs did not last long.
