Netflix "Instant Watch" silents??

Post by Darren Nemeth » Mon Dec 15, 2008 12:35 am

I just started to use Netflix's feature where you can instantly watch films over an internet connection.

I've looked but don't see any silents available for this.

Are there any that I looked over?

They used to have a bunch of silents on Watch Instantly, mostly Film Preservation Associates releases from the past few years, but unfortunately they expired and are no longer available.

You know, this was the first thing I looked for as well - I remember watching Joan the Woman on "watch instantly" at some point. Know there doesn't even seem to be a way to browse for them.

One warning about that Chaplin video that is currently up there. It is a very bad transfer from an old video source from a bad documentary released by Independant International.

For some reason the image was was scrambled up in my browser, too.

The closest thing I found for sorting for silents in the Watch Instantly category is this:

Click on the "watch instantly" tab.

Choose "classics" on the drop down menu.

On the right hand margin click a category, such as "classic drama" (for example).

Click the "sortable list" button.

Then click the "year" link and it sorts by year. The oldest films are last, but since they go in order of year, it's easier to find what you're looking for if the genre is silents or pre-codes.

It's fussy but maybe it will work for some of you.
