Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
I ran PHANTOM LADY for my Rialto crowd last year (mint original 16 print). None of them had seen it. Everyone was flabergasted by the jam session scene. Still packs a wallop!!
One of the most interesting things about the film for me is the complete absence of incidental scoring. There is a perfunctory main title (using Universal's popular hit "I'll Remember April") and a benign end title, followed by Skinner's "Strange Faces" end cast. Other than that, the only music heard is source music - the musical show with Aurora Miranda, the jam session and radio and juke box cues. The lack of scoring really enhances the subjective realism, especially in the climactic scene.

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
For a second there I thought I could ditch my Korean quasi-bootleg DVD copy of the original version, Gone to Earth, but that Amazon post states it's the David O. Selznick recut version. But perhaps we'll be lucky enough to get both versions on one disc when more info comes to light.Rick Lanham wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 10:33 pmThe Wild Heart (Jennifer Jones, David Farrar) (Powell/Pressburger)

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
That's the exact same set Universal released in 2018. Except, as per Shout Factory's discriminatory policy, they have stripped off the captioning that Universal provided. Reprehensible, I call it.Rick Lanham wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 11:41 amFrom Shout! Factory

What we really need is THE BLACK CAT - UNCUT!
I bet the pre-release version is hiding in a cupboard at the Library of Congress!

I bet it's not. I'm afraid that was blown to bits along with Fort Marmaros!
For fans of the musical score, here is a "playlist" I put together a while back:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EhgGjHcLDg
It even includes the jazz record played in the railway car.
And here is my faux trailer that I had printed in 16mm:

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
The Shout Factory page on the Karloff/Lugosi set lists the aspect ratio of 1.33:1, when the films were released at standard 1.37:1. The recent Universal blu-rays of films from that period had the correct aspect ratio. Are the Shout technical specs just a case of marketing doofusness, or will these be wrong aspect ratios or from old transfers?

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
The Kino rep at Home Theater Forum has announced Death Takes a Holiday (1934) as "coming soon". It's part of a large deal they have with Universal, including a dozen or so 30s titles.
Other titles from that decade confirmed as part of the deal (no specifics or release dates yet) include Love Me Tonight (32), The Song of Songs (33), The Good Fairy (35), The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (35), The General Died at Dawn (36), Angel (37), Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (38), and Beau Geste (39).

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
That's good news, I remember it got a sneaky DVD release years ago as a bonus feature with the deluxe edition of its remake, the unspectacular Meet Joe Death starring Brad Pitt.Harold Aherne wrote: ↑Fri Feb 01, 2019 7:05 pmThe Kino rep at Home Theater Forum has announced Death Takes a Holiday (1934) as "coming soon". Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
If it exists, it would be nice to see the original uncut version of THE INVISIBLE RAY. The version that's been around forever is the Realart re-issue where there's a tell-tale excision with a few remaining frames. What can be observed if you don't blink is Frank Lawton shooting a tiger that's about to pounce on Frances Drake. This breaks the ice and leads to their romance.Rick Lanham wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 11:41 amFrom Shout! Factory

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
I suspect that the scene was cut prior to release when someone belatedly realized there are no tigers in Africa. The music track for the scene survives on acetate disc.bobfells wrote: ↑Mon Feb 04, 2019 12:43 pmIf it exists, it would be nice to see the original uncut version of THE INVISIBLE RAY. Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
More Kino announcements:
*Becky Sharp (1935), coming 16 April, with commentary by Jack Theakston, a 4K scan
*The House of the Seven Gables (1940), coming 23 April
Two collections of 1930-31 RKO titles (some are actually late Pathé productions):
*Classic Adventures: The Pay Off, The Silver Horde, The Painted Desert
*Classic Romances: Sin Takes a Holiday, Kept Husbands, The Lady Refuses, Millie, The Woman Between
Both are being produced in association with Lobster Films. These films' copyrights expired in 1958-59 when RKO, during a period of corporate retrenchment, neglected to renew them.
Also coming in April are three British silents restored by the BFI. Someone may want to make a separate thread in the silent news section.
*Shooting Stars (1928)
*Underground (1928)
*The Informer (1929)

These upcoming blu rays may have been mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but I see on Amazon that K-L will be releasing the first four Crosby/Hope Road pictures--Singapore, Zanzibar, Morocco, and Rio--on March 26. "Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man...."

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
Black Angel (Dan Duryea, June Vincent, Peter Lorre) is coming to blu-ray in late January 2020:
https://arrowfilms.com/product-detail/b ... ay/FCD1974
https://www.amazon.com/Black-Angel-Blu- ... day&sr=8-1
/////
Elegantly directed by Hollywood veteran Roy William Neill (best known for his 11 Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone), Black Angel is an underappreciated film noir treasure, adapted from a novel by the acclaimed crime writer Cornell Woolrich (Phantom Lady).
When the beautiful singer Mavis Marlowe (Constance Dowling) is slain in her chic apartment, the men in her life become suspects. There is Martin Blair (Dan Duryea, Scarlet Street), her alcoholic musician ex-husband, nursing a broken heart; there is the shady nightclub owner Marko (Peter Lorre, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon) who has been sneaking around her place, and there is Kirk Bennett (John Phillips), the adulterer who found his mistress s dead body and fled the scene. When Bennett is convicted and sentenced to death, his long-suffering wife Catherine (June Vincent) joins forces with the heartbroken pianist Martin Blair to uncover the truth...
Black Angel is a consummate 1940s crime thriller which boats a suspenseful narrative, strong performances and atmospheric, meticulously lit cinematography. Roy William Neill s film is presented here in a sumptuous restoration, with several illuminating new extras.

Re: Some Upcoming Blu-Rays
Unless I missed it in a subsequent post, it doesn't look like anyone else has noted this here so I will: the Kino Lorber blu-ray does indeed include both the Selznick The Wild Heart and the original Gone to Earth. I've not watched either in their entirety yet but from sampling some scenes the transfer of Gone to Earth actually looks nicer (to my untrained eyes) than The Wild Heart.s.w.a.c. wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 3:43 pmFor a second there I thought I could ditch my Korean quasi-bootleg DVD copy of the original version, Gone to Earth, but that Amazon post states it's the David O.
