Nice tune, what's the story?

This station was originally owned by the Haynes publishing company when it was established in 1935. The waltz was written by Alberto Castellano (who conducted the music of two Gardel films filmed in Astoria) and he is the one conducting the orchestra of the radio station.

Radio El Mundo was the most important broadcaster of South America in its day up until 1948 when the Argentine government took ownership of the station although it later returned to private hands.

Unfortunately, earlier this year the station was officially closed due to economic and political conflicts of the owner of the license to the point that the Federal Government took away their license.

This waltz was used as the music that played before the station used to go off the air. But what you hear in the opening and ending was used as a separator between shows.

This separator is called "gong" and it is played in a xylophone. The separator became very popular and soon all radio stations adopted their own gongs... I have to prepare a video featuring many of them.
