The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

Post by Ossi » Sun Nov 03, 2019 8:24 am

Yesterday I watched the 1925 issue version of The Phantom of the Opera. Does anyone of you know to what extent it was reshot in 1929? Norman Kerry looked distinctly younger to me than in the later version. However, quite a number of other scenes looked identical to me, among others those with Lon Chaney.

They didn't have Lon Chaney in 1929, so all of his scenes are from 1925. The opera sequences were the places they particularly wanted to add sound, so those were re-shot. Some of the non-Lon-Chaney scenes were deleted, because that's who audiences wanted to see. So, for instance, the sequence where Christine talks to Raoul about "the spirit of music'" was in the 1925 version, but cut for 1929.

I see. Thank you. So probably I was mistaken with Norman Kerry.

Just as long as you're not mistaken for Norman Kerry.

Could be worse. You could be mistaken for Snitz Edwards.
