This film provided M-G-M an opportunity to showcase the impressive talents of studio newcomer Van Heflin, who had just earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar® for the 1941 crime hit Johnny Eager. The studio found an ideal role for Heflin in Andrew Johnson, the Tennessee tailor-turned-senator who broke with the South, rose to the vice presidency under Abraham Lincoln and soon became – after Lincoln’s assassination – the first U.S. president to face impeachment. With inspired direction by William Dieterle, Heflin convinces as Johnson “by the sheer sincerity and strength of his performance” (The New York Times). Studio stalwart Lionel Barrymore portrays Johnson’s nemesis, Thaddeus Stevens, and Ruth Hussey plays Johnson's devoted wife.

WATERLOO BRIDGE (1940) New 2020 1080p Master from 4K Scan from Best Surviving Preservation Elements
Myra and Roy meet and fall in love on Waterloo Bridge during an air raid during World War I. But their love will be one of the war’s unspoken casualties. Heartbroken after Roy is reportedly killed in action, Myra turns to prostitution to make ends meet - but the report is false! When Roy returns from a POW camp eager to begin life anew with his beloved, Myra’s shattered spirit may no longer hold any room for happiness. Vivien Leigh plays Myra, at once winning and breaking viewers’ hearts in this exquisite melodrama. In a compassionate performance that was his all-time favorite, Robert Taylor is the gallant Roy. Mervyn LeRoy’s astute direction, and MGM's lush pre-war production make Waterloo Bridge a meeting place for lovers.

THE OPPOSITE SEX (1956) New 2020 1080p Master
“I’ve waited a whole year to grow claws like these -- Jungle Red!” One of film’s greatest lines belongs to a wronged wife who wins back her man with the aid of an aggressive shade of nail polish. First a hit play, then an all-star 1939 (and later, 2008) movie, The Women resurfaces here as the musical The Opposite Sex , complete with an all-star cast, lines dipped in acid wit, big production numbers and fabulous ‘50s couture in scintillating CinemaScope. June Allyson portrays the betrayed woman. Joan Collins is the siren who steals her husband. And Dolores Gray, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller, Agnes Moorehead, Charlotte Greenwood and Joan Blondell are assorted gal pals (true-blue and envy-green) who convince their demure friend to paint her colorful claws – and use 'em. 16x9 Letterbox

Try as I might, I always have had a hard time taking THE MORTAL STORM entirely seriously given it tries to get away with casting Robert Young as a Nazi zealot.
THE OPPOSITE SEX exemplifies everything that went wrong for MGM after Louis B. Mayer was bounced out and Dore Schary took the helm (well, sort of) as the studio continued flying blind into combat against the new medium of television, that is to say, ignoring it and trying to carry on as before, cranking out movies that offered the public absolutely nothing they were not getting at home courtesy of the boob tube. I've seen worse movies, but it's been a long time since I saw one so completely, suffocatingly BLAND. Joan Collins, ironically, isn't bitchy enough as she steps into Joan Crawford's shoes. TENNESSE JOHNSON works because of the acting talent involved, even if it brushes under the rug some of the seventeenth President's more unappealing qualities. It's fun to see Lionel Barrymore and Montagu Love teamed up again 13 years after THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (sadly Love wasn't around much longer), and the gimmick of never showing Lincoln's face or hearing his voice is pretty bizarre.

TEX AVERY SCREWBALL CLASSICS - VOLUME 2
New 2020 1080p HD Masters
Run Time: 149:00
Subtitles: English SDH
Audio Specs: DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 - English
Aspect Ratio: 4x3, 1.37:1 Full Frame
Product Color: COLOR
Disc Configuration: BD 50
Special Feature: Documentary "Tex Avery: King of Cartoons"

Welcome back for another three-ring circus of animated comedy from the legendary leader of cartoon fun – director Tex Avery. In the first ring, Avery serves up some of his finest one-shot creations: cartoons featuring cats who hate people, wacky cuckoo clocks, kooky cavemen and lovelorn French fleas. We also meet up again with Avery's attractive Red Riding Hood, a pair of amorous wolves and his durable all-around fall guy, Spike. The second ring is a showcase for Avery's ironically deadpan "Happy Hound": Droopy. This time, Droopy appears in a number of guises – each one funnier than the last. As bandleader "John Pettybone," he leads his jazz-playing fleas to the heights of canine stardom. Out West, as a homesteader and a sheepherder, he has his final showdowns with the Wolf. The third ring offers a whimsical glimpse into the future – or at least a future from the POV of the mid-20th century – with a plethora of zany postwar inventions. While none of the cartoons "of tomorrow" foresaw smartphones or Blu-ray players, these far-fetched contraptions, gadgets, houses and farms, televisions, and various modes of transportation could only come from the madcap mind of Avery and his MGM crew. Uncut, restored and remastered in High Definition for the first time, Tex Avery Screwball Classics Collection Volume 2 is another must-own collection from the master of hand-drawn mayhem.

This 21 cartoon collection includes:

1 LITTLE RURAL RIDING HOOD
2 THE CUCKOO CLOCK

Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh are warmly matched in Holiday Affair, a seasonal favorite scripted by Isobel Lennart (later to adapt Mitchum's The Sundowners) and directed by Hope/Crosby "road movies" veteran Don Hartman.

The USS Reluctant carries cargo along World War II's forgotten Pacific seaways. Beyond the horizon, the real war passes its stir-crazy crew by. Mister Roberts, directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy, is the classic story of men fighting to survive – not war's dangers, but its indignities. Henry Fonda's reprise of his Tony®-winning Broadway role returned him to movies after seven years away. Jack Lemmon won his first Academy Award® as hapless, lecherous Ensign Pulver. James Cagney's petty, scrappy Captain makes a fierce adversary. In his final film, William Powell makes world-weary Doc a sage for the ages. Mister Roberts has moments of unforgettable humor. But sadness tempers the comedy. No shot is fired. No blood is spilled. Yet Mister Roberts endures as one of our most truthful war sagas.

Mitchum and Leigh are warmly matched in this seasonal favorite scripted by Isobel Lennart, who later to adapt Mitchum's The Sundowners , and directed by Hope/Crosby "road movies" veteran, Don Hartman. Special Feature: Lux Radio Theater broadcast (12/18/50) with Robert Mitchum and Laraine Day, Original Theatrical Trailer

MISTER ROBERTS (1955) New 2020 1080p HD Remaster from 4K Scan of Original Negative
The USS Reluctant carries cargo along World War II's forgotten Pacific seaways, but beyond the horizon, the real war passes its stir-crazy crew by. In his final film, William Powell makes his world-weary Doc a sage for the ages. Mister Roberts has moments of unforgettable humor, but sadness tempers the comedy. No shot is fired. No blood is spilled. Yet Mister Roberts endures as one of our most truthful war sagas. Special Features: Commentary by Jack Lemmon, Original Theatrical Trailer (HD) 16x9 Letterbox
