HEPPY'S DAUGHTER - Cecil M. Hepworth documentary, and Kennington Bioscope livestream pilot

Post by tadao » Sat Apr 25, 2020 7:59 am

Hi everyone,

The Kennington Bioscope, based at the Cinema Museum in London, is launching a YouTube channel this week. Our first event is a web premiere screening of the 2009 documentary "Heppy's Daughter", an interview with Val Williamson, daughter of British silent film pioneer Cecil M. Hepworth, including excerpts from her father's work. It'll appear in this playlist, which currently has a preview clip of the documentary, on Weds April 29th at 19:30 BST (UTC+1).

[the forum doesn't seem able to embed a playlist like it does for a normal video, I'll try to update with the direct URL once the countdown is set]

When we get 100 subscribers, we can have a user friendly channel address, it's currently this:

Subscribe to the channel and you'll get notified of new content, and help us on our way to 100!

Hope to see some of you there! Description for the upload below:
We're pleased to launch the Kennington Bioscope YouTube channel with "Heppy's Daughter", generously provided by Film Friends Productions with the gracious permission of the BFI for clips supplied from the BFI National Archive. Web premiere event in association with The Kennington Bioscope and The Cinema Museum, Kennington, London, closed like other arts spaces for the duration of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The premiere screening goes live at 19:30 BST (UTC+1) on Weds April 29th 2020. If you're logged in, you can comment along with the screening in the chat box on the right; or hide the box and go fullscreen to avoid any distraction. The documentary runs 58 minutes. English subtitles are available, and the automatic captions for other languages may be more useful than usual as a result.

In the documentary produced in 2009, Val Williamson, daughter of British silent film pioneer Cecil M. Hepworth, discusses her father with film historian Tony Fletcher. Including excerpts from some of his most famous films, including the Tilly comedies and 'Rescued by Rover', as well as 'phantom rides', pictorial films made on rail journeys. Val also discusses her own work in the field of pottery.

The documentary was screened at Le Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone in 2009, and at the Bradford International Film Festival in 2010. Clips from the films were included with Val's blessing from material deposited by the C.M. Hepworth Moving Picture Trust with the BFI National Archive.

Cheers Lee!

Delighted to say that we've had a wonderful response on social media, and reached 140 subscribers to the channel before the screening. That's this evening, 19:30 UK time (20:30 CEST for mainland Europe, 14:30 EDT, 11:30 PDT, sorry if I missed your zone). It's a really wonderful documentary, and we're very grateful to Film Friends Productions and the BFI for giving us the go-ahead.

Strongly recommended to follow the link to YouTube (rather than watching in the embed), where you'll have a chance to say hi to other viewers in the chat box.

Also pleased to announce that the 1 hour screening will be followed immediately afterwards by a public pilot of the Kennington Bioscope's *live streaming* presence, anticipated to run about half an hour, where we're planning to present live introductions and live piano scores to two shorts from the Jean Desmet Collection, by very kind permission of Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam. The films have Dutch intertitles and English subtitles. The best way to join us for that is to join the 'Heppy's Daughter' premiere, and links will pop up in the credits, chatbox and description. The link to the live pilot should also show up on the Kennington Bioscope channel once it starts at 20:30 for 20:35 UK time.

Please join us if you can!

Kennington Bioscope livestream pilot

The livestream pilot broadcast after the documentary went very nicely, thanks to excellent work from pianist and tech guru Cyrus and historian and presenter Michelle; if you missed the show you can catch up below, and share the link with anyone who'd enjoy it. We showed 'Love and Science' and 'Mixed Identities' from the Jean Desmet collection, with grateful thanks to Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam for their kind permission and support, without which the show wouldn't have been possible.

We're hoping to run these events regularly while the world's in lockdown, we'd love to see you there for the next one!
