Aren't those timed for the Arte broadcast, so they don't synch with the DVD or this stream?

Yeah, those don't sync. You can tweak them a bit but they're still pretty far off. Luckily they're kind of close so by the time they roll around after (or before) the intertitle you can sort of get the gist of what's going on. I think I mentioned my Plan B which is having them printed out or on my tablet and just following along as the titles roll by.

Not ideal but better than nothing.

I take it for granted that the exact correct subtitle files are not available for nearly all of these new restorations. So available subtitles for older editions can be used as read-along files -- that is, you read along while watching the movie.

If you use Media Player Classic (on Windows) to watch a movie, you can load a subtitle file to go with the movie. When something onscreen needs the correct subtitle, you can select the line in the subtitle list to display and resynchronize.

If you synchronise subtitle 29 in the .SRT file (Before the temple of Adonis ...) with that intertitle on the streamed video, then by the time you get to subtitle 31 (Adonis, the god of spring..) the video is 3 seconds ahead. It jumps further out, rapidly, subtitle 38 (Spare me Menelaus..) the video is a whopping 12 seconds ahead of the subtitles.

This is not a linear displacement that can easily be corrected nor is there a difference that is explainable by framerates. The only way I can see to line these subtitles up with the streamed video, is manually, line by line. That Arte broadcast must have been quite different.

Yeah it's as if each subtitle adds 3 seconds.

Mind you, subtitles from the DVD might work. But the edition that I own, does not have any.

Give it time - people are working on it.

The existing subtitle files are for an earlier edition, which means any combination of: different source materials, different ordering, different frame rates, etc. I just manually resync most of the title cards to subtitles; sometimes that allows for the next few subtitle to be timed somewhat well without manually intervening.

This newer version has more material than the earlier one, including more title cards. So, in "Helena" part one, there are several title cards with no corresponding subtitles in the .srt file. For example, in part 1 at 25:04 there is a title card that says, "Von den Priestern mit dem göttlichen Gürtel Aphroditens geschmückt begab sich Helena zum Adonisfest auf Cythera." ("Helen, adorned by the priests with the sacred belt of Aphrodite, went to the Festival of Adonis on Cythera.") Nothing in the subtitle file for that.

The source material for the title cards is different in this version as well, so some of the translations in the subtitle files are different. One of the subtitles says, "The Greek princes are united in singing your praises. Take this crown of Adonis and place it at dawn on the head of the winner of the chariot race." But the German text on-screen translates to something more like, "The princes of Greece are gathered to pay homage to Aphrodite with competitions. Take this wreath and consecrate it at the Altar of Adonis to decorate the winner of the chariot race at sunrise."

The subtitle files have a few odd entries that don't seem to correspond to anything in the movie, or maybe are way out of order, like "Who rewards this shepherd with the stature of a hero?"

At least the title cards are legible, unlike the bad handwriting and jumbled Germanic print of "The Student of Prague".

Nice to see this comparative rarity. Unfortunately marred by strange compression artifacts and macro-blocking in shadows...and there are a lot of shadows.

Modern live-recorded jazz score rather too diffuse for the sinister Kammerspiel

Nobody's announced it here yet: Max Mack's charming Die Tangokönigin (1913) is now being streamed. My brief Google search did not turn up the names of the actors except star Hanni Weisse. Olga Engl is supposedly there somewhere, but I didn't see her.

More generally, I recommend that people follow these links to get a better idea of what is happening, not just this week. Note that the museum also has videos other than silents.

There has been an assortment of movies from the museum, aside from silents. These two video essays were good, and in English.

"Conrad Veidt – My Life" (2019). 60'

"Becoming Anita Ekberg" (2014). 18'

Yikes, I would think the museum would want to let people know more directly -- on their own web site.

Good news, everybody! https://www.stummfilm-magazin.de/kalender.html announces three more silent streams from the Munich Film Museum:

- October 1 to 4: DER KAUFMANN VON VENEDIG/The Merchant of Venice (Germany 1923)
- October 18 to 21: SOL' SVANETI/Salt for Svanetia (USSR 1930)
- October 29 to November 1: DIE FLAMME/The Flame (Germany 1922)

I highly recommend DIE FLAMME, the museum's reconstruction of Lubitsch's last European film, with Pola Negri and Alfred Abel. I have seen it and it is impressive.

On a related topic: to coincide with the launch of the third series of BABYLON BERLIN; German national broadcaster ARD are offering a smorgasbord of Weimar classics for streaming here:
https://www.ardmediathek.de/ard/sendung ... VyLTIwZXI/

The titles are:

METROPOLIS
DIE FRAU IM MOND/ Woman in the Moon
DER BLAUE ENGEL/ The Blue Angel
DER LETZTE MANN/ The Last Laugh
DR MABUSE DER SPIELER 1 + 2/ Dr Mabuse the Gamler
DIE BÜCHSE DER PANDORA/ Pandora's Box
BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ
TAGEBUCH EINER VERLORENEN/ Diary of a Lost Girl
M
ASCHENPUTTEL/ Cinderella
MENSCHEN AM SONNTAG/ People on Sunday

all in HD.

I do not know whether you need to be in Germany or the EU to avail yourself of this offer. A VPN might help otherwise.
