Lynn Kellogg Dies at 77

Post by drednm » Sun Nov 15, 2020 8:44 am

Although she had only a few acting roles in film/TV she was in the original Broadway production of Hair, singing "Easy to Be Hard" as well as "Let the Sun Shine," "Aquarius," "Good Morning Starshine" and others.

Based on what I recall from her absolutely terrific performance as Sheila, I thought Lynn should have gone on to major stardom. I attended a matinee performance of the show on a stifling August day, 52 years ago last summer, and when I emerged from the theater into the sunlight, the crawing-headline on the Times Building was announcing the infamous "Police Riot" back home in Chicago. Thanks for the memory-jog, Ed.

The NYT obit mentioned lyricists/actors Gerome Ragni and (the still living) James Rado, but omitted the composer, Galt MacDermot. The casts were extraordinary. The show spawned five pop hits. Click poster for info

I haven't thought of this lady in decades; I only knew her from a credit not mentioned here and possibly her most famous, the ABC-TV children's series ANIMALS ANIMALS ANIMALS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animals,_Animals,_Animals which aired on weekends from 1976 to 1980 which my brothers and I watched every week as preteens/early teens; Lynn sang the title song (which you can probably find on youtube but I won't look, it's one of those tunes you can't get out of your head for awhile) and appeared on every episode I believe singing an original song about animals near the end of the show. Wondered at times why I never saw her anywhere else on television although she apparently did do a few talk shows. The show was hosted by Hal Linden who I only knew from this program at the time, our family didn't watch Barney Miller; it was a forerunner to those dozens of inexpensively produced animal shows aimed at kids that air on Saturdays and Sundays now under the information and education banner in slots where original cartoons were decades ago.

I couldn't believe IMDb didn't credit Kellogg with her AAA work so I sent them a "correction" which hopefully soon include it in her credits; some of her obituaries claim she won an Emmy for the show but it appears the show itself won the Emmy rather than her specifically unless that information is not correct on IMDb.
